As the summer sun starts boiling lakes, the fish go deep. No matter how you drop or suspend your baits, try to keep them at least 24" off the bottom. Otherwise, you'll handle every catfish in the place.

Try cut bait. Scale and "fillet" one of the gills and hook a small piece on a bobber rig as you would a minnow. I use #1 or #2 aberdeen (thin wire) hooks, but others go as small as #6. Put enough split shot above the leader so the bait sinks quickly, but not so much that it drags your cork under. Set your corks at staggered depths so the deepest bait's suspended at least 24" off the bottom. In clear water, you can set them higher. When the bite's on, they will come all the way to the surface to grab a bait left danging right a the surface. Last week at Beaverdam, both crappies & white perch were grabbing cut bait as quickly as minnows.
