Sounds like a great time
I accepted another invite from 870 to fish yet another one of his private access ponds last night and after the recent wet weather, I was happy to accept. 3 trips, 3 different ponds. We launched about 5pm under overcast skies, with no wind for a change. Air temp about 70 and if I asked him about water temps, I forgot what he told me.
We were ahead of most of the weeds topping out on the surface but they weren't too far from it; we either dragged a road runner or other lure across the top and through the openings or tried to drop a jig straight down into the pockets. Only time in my life where I wished I had one of those 12-14' poles you guys use for "dipping". It was actually quite exciting as we could often see the fish streak out of the cabbage weeds and take our lures. We had a ton of laughs and a wonderful time doing it.
Once again, the first crappie in to the boat was not mine and it once again turned out to be the biggest at just under 12". I didn't get a pic of it but I'm pretty sure my partner did.
It took a while for me to score a crappie but I did, a couple of about 10".
We had a hard time finding the crappie all night but we both sure had the 6" bluegill dialed in perfect. Of the 100+ fish in to the boat, an easy 90% were bluegill, with about an even split of 5% each of bass and crappie. Sure wasn't for lack of trying but the bigger crappie just eluded us tonight. We've had over an inch of rain the last 2 days and the water was relatively murky and cloudy. We tried lots of different styles and colors, too.
We called it a night at 8:30 and when we peeked into the cooler, our 6 keepers looked pretty skimpy compared to other trips. Good thing is it sure sped up our filleting time!
Regardless of the numbers or sizes, it was another fun and memorable trip with a good friend. And he didn't go in over the tops of his boots this time, either!
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.S10CHEVY LIKED above post
