    Default Unexpected day off

I was scheduled to be working a lot of overtime this week but things changed and I was able to find some time to fish. The weather has been great here for a couple of days. This morning when I set out the air temp was 20 degrees warmer than last week which was a chilly 34. Mid 50’s with no wind and the sun shining.

I tried a lake this morning that I haven’t done a lot of fishing on. I have not had much luck locating Crappie here in the past but figured I had to keep trying. Water temp was 65 on the North end and 63 on the South end. Which is about 10 degrees warmer than the lake I fished last week.

The first area I tried on the North end wasn’t very active. I caught a couple of Smallmouth, one Yellow Perch, and this one nice male Crappie.

I couldn’t get a bite on any other Crappie in that area. Eventually I decided to try an area on the other end of the lake that I had never fished. That didn’t produce very well at first either. Caught a couple more small Bass and this thing.

I moved down the shoreline and eventually got to an area that looked pretty promising to me. Depth was better, a little structure around and a big fallen tree in the water. It turned out to be the spot I had been looking for. Got into a few nice Crappie there. They were in the area of the tree but out away from it a little bit. Caught several nice females which I released, they still had eggs in them. Also caught three more nice males to add to the cooler. Quit fishing a little after 9:00 to leave some for another day. Now I have a good starting point and I can explore that shoreline a little more next time. With these quality fish I will definitely be going back.

Yes Sir, those are definitely picture worthy, nice fish and story. And a fresh water mussel, well that's a first for me seeing one of those come in the boat!
Did it put up much of a fight and did you have the net ready?

    Inquiring minds want to know!
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.

Actually I thought I was caught on bottom. I guess it was wedged in between a couple of rocks. Luckily I had a knife in the boat to pry it open enough to get my hook out. I didn't realize how hard mussels clenched down.
