    Default Another slow night, 8-19

Made another trip this afternoon to a different pond. Conditions at home were great, low wind, nice cloud cover, seemed like a good setup for a good trip. Got to the launch and it was near whitecaps out there. Flipped a mental coin and pushed off into the tempest and was ready to fish at 4:40.
Didn't have a whole lot of choice where I went due to the wind; it was coming basically from the SSW and this water does not fish well for me when the wind is coming from that general direction.
Did a lot of basin drifting Walt and Rich style to start, nada.
Rowed into the wind along the weed edge, nada.
Tried another basin drift for a while. No takers. By now, well over an hour had slipped by. Decided to change out one pole to a new color Crappie Magnet, the Heavy D version. Slipped it on their 1/16th ounce ball head jig, tossed it out in about 24' of water and took a couple of hard strokes on the oars to get straightened out and BAM!, a hard hit on the Road runner that might have been laying in muck or had sunk deeper than expected. Knew right away it was no crappie or bluegill. Hard fighter that tangled into one of the other lines and I ended up hand lining this nice bass in; it would measure out at 15" but a heavy, solid fish. In the middle of the basin, no less!

No other takers on that drift and once again, turned the boat in to the wind and made my way along the contours closer to the weed line than I had on my first return pass. Another hard hit, this time on that new Crappie Magnet and the twin to the first bass got to see the inside of the boat.

I was happy to land these nice bass but I've become a bit of a crappie snob; I wanted to boat a few of our favorite quarry! I had noticed the wind was easing off some as I rowed up against that wind. It was now about 6:20 or so and the shade was now covering the weed line I like to fish. I made another small circle out in to the basin and down the pond, then eased back over closer to the weedline. I changed out to 1/32 oz. jigs and moved in close to the line in 14-16' of water. The wind died off completely and I had about 45 minutes of calm water to work my way along that weed edge and finally got the first crappie of the night, about a 10"er.

I'm beginning to like these Crappie Magnets! 2 more crappie would be fooled, one on the roadrunner and one on a Crappie Stinger before the wind returned and I called it a night at 7:40.

A total of 7 fish would be caught as I'd landed 2 small 'gills as well. A tough trip but a good on none the less.
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.

Good job. That'd be a good day for me, especially this time of year.

Some good bass and crappie. I’d be happy with that. Good job, thanks for sharing.
