That top water certainly gets your heart pumping
Went out to my perch and bluegill spot, hoping to catch some spawning bluegill. Cast out a crickhopper, which kept getting attacked on top water, when I'd twitch it every few seconds. (There seemed to be some green sunfish silhouettes in the mix, which makes sense as I caught a green sunfish x pumpkinseed sunfish last year) Tons of beds, but the pond was pretty small/shallow, so most of the fish were too small to get hooked on the crickhopper. Wasn't expecting to catch a crappie out of this body of water, though, as I didn't know they were in the area. Small (seems to be a theme with this pond, but overall a beautiful fish!
Also caught a small-ish bass, but that wasn't my target species at all.

Where there's small ones there should be bigger ones, too. What size hook were you using that the smaller fish couldn't get a lip around it?
Nice crappie and it kept the skunk off your back, too; that's a win on 2 fronts!
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.CTPanfisher LIKED above post
According to Google the crickhopper has a size 14 hook. Not sure why they couldn't get hooked, but they just kept either missing it, or otherwise not getting hooked. This is a very odd pond, it's super shallow in the center (just a foot or two), and has a donut shape around it. Japanese knotweed has taken Over the other side, so I can't access the deeper part either. Might get some boots and wade down the stream portion to get to the other side.

Thanks! It's been a struggle without a boat, but this spot thankfully has relatively good shore access, as it has a public trout stream going through it. Hopefully I can learn some more from fellow New Englanders, and everyone in the forum.

Good report. If you ever have an opportunity to get a boat in there I am sure you will find more Crappie. Good luck.
It'd be difficult to get a boat in there. The pond itself is max 10 feet deep, and that's only for a little section about 50 feet long. The good news is that it's basically all within casting distance.
