Nice mess of fish. Glad you got out and caught some. Good on you for taking your Dad along
I have not fished very much this year. Between a busy schedule, mechanical issues with my boat and numerous times that life got in the way, my fishing time has been pretty much zero. 2 trips ended abruptly with the boat mechanical issues.
A few weeks ago I dusted off my little 12 foot aluminum boat and took it to a local place and brought home a few White Perch. That was just like old times and felt good. Yesterday the weather was on my side and a beautiful November day as well. 50 degrees, sunny, and very little wind. I asked my father if he wanted to go out fishing instead of deer hunting yesterday and he was on board. He has been a brook trout fisherman his whole life and never fished for Crappie. He loves to eat them though.
I have a spot where I can take my small boat and get around good with the electric trolling motor and usually the odds of catching Crappie are pretty good. We get out to my spot and he casts out and hooks up immediately. Caught a Crappie around 12 inches. Then he caught another a short time later. I told him the guide fee was going to be steep for this.
It took me a while to hook up and when I did it was a little 9 inches. I kept it because the fishing was a little slow at that point. Shortly before 3:00 we both had 2 fish in the cooler, then the bite came on like somebody flipped a switch. For the next hour we caught fish like you dream about. Numerous double hook ups. I caught 3 with just my line hanging over the side of the boat while I was trying to help him net his fish. Very busy time. After 4:00 it slowed down slightly. We caught a few more and headed to shore with a full cooler as it was getting dark.
We went home to my house and emptied out the cooler onto the table and counted them up. 27 that we kept! Usually I don’t keep that many but my freezer was empty from not fishing this year and he needed fish to take home too. I gave him a quick lesson on how to filet and we got down to work.
It was a great afternoon with my father, and he was having a blast. Great to share the sport of Crappie fishing with someone who has never done it before. However I may have ruined him at the same time, he will have a hard time when he goes again and the fishing isn’t like it was yesterday. We will be getting together for a big fish fry soon!

That's getting it done nicely! Glad you and Pop had a good time and I think you're right, hope he's not counting on every crappie trip to be that action packed, especially in the waning part of the season. As to the little 12' boat, sometimes the simpler the better. Back to basics, so to speak.
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.
You're right! The back to basics approach has been a nice little trip down memory lane.
Great trip and wonderful partner. Now you have created another "Crappie nut". Good that you got out before the "hard water" is here.
Fishing in a 12' boat is great and relaxing. you're not worried about all the other stuff you have to have on the larger fishing rigs. Basic is just enough to get out and enjoy it.
Keep up the great times. Tight lines.
