Nice looking bunch of fish
Back out last night. Got set up about dusk, it was cold with light rain, I fished until 11 PM. 5 rainbows and 11 crappies. Last night I caught most of the fish on a 1/32oz jig with a 1” Gulp minnow on it. I seem to catch 10 to 15 crappie every time out but that’s it. Also caught the usual half dozen bullheads and a bunch of bluegills. One of these nights I’m going to try a slip bobber and minnows.
I’ve got to work on improving my night photography….

The love for fishing is one of the best gifts you can pass along
A very productive night once again. Are you fishing in one spot under a light or moving from spot to spot and casting around for them?
Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.
I put out one of those green Hydroglow lights and I’ll try a spot for awhile and if it doesn’t pan out I’ll move. I think it concentrates the fish in the immediate area but doesn’t really draw them in from very far. I really don’t know much about open water crappie fishing so I’ve basically adapted my ice fishing techniques to the boat.

Do you use the light under the ice as well? I've recently begun to ice fish again but never ice fished at night. Well, the one time I tried under the moon, no other lights, I got zippo. I'm your opposite; I'm learning ice fishing and you're learning open water.

This is a set up in fairly shallow water, like 12’. We put the lights just under the ice and fish about halfway down. I also use them on a lake that’s mostly 35’ and the crappie stay near the bottom for much of the winter. On that lake we put them down 5 or 10’ and fish in the bottom 10’ of water. I usually have a flasher so I can see my jig as well as the fish.
I have a couple of the 12” Hydroglow lights but you can get cheap ones on eBay or Amazon and they do the same thing, they just aren’t made very well and won’t last as long. They run off those small 12v sealed lead acid batteries.

That's very cool, thanks for the picture. While I don't have any lights, I've got all the other gear including electronics. All I need now is experience! Hopefully, we'll get better ice than we got last year. I had a lot going on and had trouble getting out when the ice was good.
