    Default Never Have I Ever…

Caught a crappie with nightcrawlers! I did catch about everything else in the lake though. Last week went out for a few hours. Was actually trying to target bluegill, which interestingly enough continue to elude me lol.

Tossed out small hook and nightcrawlers and reeled in slowly. Also tried under a bobber. I used my 7 ft UL rod with 4 lb test. The fun ensued shortly…and I mean drag screamin’ rod bendin’ fun!

Caught half a dozen whisker biscuits aka channel cats, of which 3 were keepers. Beautiful coloring on them. Next, caught several drum which were never known for their quality of table fare, but wouldn’t ya know it they fought pretty good on the ol’ noodle rod! One of them had to be close to 5 lbs and kind of pulled me around in the 1436 jon boat LOL.

After catching a tiny bluegill (at least I got one), I changed spots as the sun started to go down. Saw some striper on my LS and thought, “When in Rome…” next instant I see the whole school of em charge my bait! We are talking predatory strikes y’all! Caught a couple striper decent size, but not keepers. Next, as though they switched places in an instant, started loading up on the sand bass!

Wow, I thought. Haven’t had a catch fest like this in awhile. Almost caught everything in the lake except a crappie and largemouth.

As I finished my tasty beverage and took in the sunset, I fired up the jon boat for the short hop to the dock.

At full speed - a blistering 20 mph in this boat - my beloved Stetson cowboy hat took flight. I watched it hit the water and begin to slowly sink into the abyss as I motored away. I did a very sporty U-turn and charged at it in the boat, full steam ahead. When I got to it, could barely see it 2-3 ft under. I reached down as far as I could stretch and just barely got it by the tip of the brim. Glory to God for letting me get that one back!! Truly, best catch of the day was my Stetson. I love that hat haha.

Amazed at my luck and success playing with nightcrawlers, I cruised back to dock. After running the gas out of carb, the 9.9 was ready to go home. All told, I had a blast even if crappie wasn’t on the menu that day!

I know this isn’t a story about crappie, but it was a fun day on the water I wanted to share with you all. Thanks for coming along for the ride!! Kaboom is the word.

    Best,
    Slab Apprentice

I still remember catching a big crappie once on a night crawler when I was a kid.
Worms are pretty low on their menu but when a fish gets hungry enough they eat most anything.

we ketch crappie on worms in a few spots , but to be sure the worm is a splendid little bait ....
sooner or later about everything that swims will eat one ....
pk at night under the green light docks .....try it . tiny pcs. of hotdogs . thank me later ....
p.s. nothing makes me sadder than watching my favorite hat sink in the lake ,it makes for a very strange kind of desperate feeling for sure ....

Not sure what size you keep, but the small ones skinned and head cut off eat great. Fry them on the bone. I'm talking about 6 to 10 inch bodies when cleaned. Put a couple angled slices in each side. Will hold the corn meal better and will come off the bone easier.
