The mask that they are finally reluctantly advising everybody to wear does not do anything to protect you personally from this virus. It protects those you encounter since it catches any droplets of liquid that may leave your mouth or nose when you talk, cough or sneeze. The airborne virus are too small for a paper or cloth mask to stop so you can still breathe them in if you are too near somebody that is sick with this disease.
So the safest thing is to stay home as much as possible.
