About to relocate from Charleston, SC to San Antonio could someone give me a report and some advice on where and what fish are being targeted? Thanks in advance

Canyon Lake I believe will be the closest. It's a COE lake that's deep and clear. The state keeps it stocked with stripers and considered one of the top striper lakes in Texas. I believe the crappie fishing is poor though, I might be wrong. Welcome to Texas!

Welcome to the site and board! Join in and enjoy the site as there is a mountain of great info here! Also once you moved in a get ready to fish come back and tell us how your doing!
If you don't mind being careful to stay out of the Mexican side, Falcon Lake on the border down there are great Bass lakes. Falcon became a huge story a few years ago due to the Bass Masters going there and catching huge stringers of bass. Here are a couple links..
Also there are a few other waters you may want to check out like Lake South of San Antonio and as others have mentioned their is Canyon Lake also. However if you want some great Salt Water fishing, just go down near Corpus for beautiful water and lots of Red fish and Speckled Trout! Some of the best fishing you will find any place! If you go in your own boat I wouldn't actually go to Corpus Bay, but just North of Corpus I lived for 11 years and great fishing. Also South of Corpus in the Laguna Madre down near Kingsville is also awesome for huge Speckled Trout. Then when spring break go all the way down to South Padre Island and that place fills up. FYI the North end of Padre is just ending at Corpus. ANyway explore the coast it's fantastic!
This is about the lake.

Thanks everyone for the info i am humbly gracious for you guys taking out the time to respond. Coming from Charleston , South Carolina where i called home and fished we had freshwater on the left and saltwater on the right which was very convenient. I'm a crappie and big bream enthusiast when it comes to freshwater and spottail bass, trout and flounder on the saltwater side. I do have a boat but will not be taking with me on the relocation trip so it will feel strange for me fishing from the banks.(LOL)
Invest in a kayak and fish the Guadalupe River. If it's hot, fish under the shade trees. Great fishing opportunities.

Well I can tell you one thing that you can do without a boat, but need to be careful. In the fall there is a Flounder run and you can go to the ship channel where the Ferry Boats cross and get a good gig and light and walk the banks. I have done a little of that on the Port Aransas side. If you can find a friend with a boat then you can go down the opposite side along the channel headed to the Aransas bay. Probably can do some surf fishing if so inclined, but even a 14' or 16' Jon boat will do in the bay system. You can make a rig to hold Coleman lanterns using 105 siding to hold the lantern in place shinning down on the water for gigging. Then you can fish most all the bay system from Aransas Pass to past Rockport and so much great fishing for Reds and Trout! Lots of Oyster reefs and other good stuff to fish. Drifting the flats use to be one of my favorite things to do and casting a spoon for the Red fish! So much of the water is clear that far South too.
When I moved down there in 1980 it didn't take long for this fresh water fisherman to jump right over to the saltwater side and boy I had so much fun it was just crazy! Some of the schools of red fish were huge, big enough for one day me looking for the boat that made a wave that was coming at me. It was all red fish and wave had to be several hundred yards long.
You should be able to find a friend there that would have a boat and you guys could have a ton of fun!

Lake calavras and lake braunig are both in San Antonio, you can catch redfish and stringers of catfish there. If your hunting crappie, need to go east a little bit. Guadalupe river holds them well and all the lakes the Guadalupe feeds to the coast. One of my favorite lakes is outside Goliad, Tx. Coletto Creek resivour. Great crappie and bass fishing.

tailtiger2, welcome to the San Antonio area. There are lots of good fishing spots in this area. Sounds like you are a crappie and bream fisherman, so Canyon Lake, Choke Canyon and LBJ are good choices. Right now is a good time for bream fishing in the smaller Guadalupe river lakes with tree lined banks and docks: Dunlap, Placid, Meadow, etc. Once the water cools (generally in later October) crappie fishing picks up. This part of Texas may not be noted for great crappie fishing, like north Texas, but it does have some very good fishing. If you need some help, get in touch with me.
