Default Austin area for crappie and camping

I live in Illinois and my wife and I will be visiting our daughter and family in Austin sometime this year (2015). We would be bringing a large RV down. We are looking for good camping and crappie fishing near Austin. We won't be able to bring our boat so would be fishing probably with a guide and any other fishing would be from bank or boat rental. Also looking for suggestions on guide who would be good with kids (7 yr. old). Looking for campground with children friendly activities since could probably only afford guide for one day. Thanks in advance. Our time to come down has not been decided yet.

Be sure to spend some time in the hills west of Austin if you can. Fredericksburg is a great town to visit. German food and great military museum. President Johnson's park. Great free driving tour. Nominal fee to tour the house(worth the $2). Great old town main street shopping. Marble Falls has a nice campground on a lake. A great granite rock to hike. A cavern to tour underground. Check out the campgrounds on Good Sam. I've stayed at La Hacienda rv park on the north west corner of Austin. A beautiful modern park. Also recommend Mller's rv park about 40 miles west of Austin . You can fish from the bank there. A couple things to do in Austin. See the baseball team play in Red Rock. Watch the bats come out of the 3rd street bridge(free). Visit the state capitol(free). Visit the river front. Visit the Lady Bird Johnson wildflower center. Anyway, you can tell I love visiting Austin and the Hill country.

Well yes as Danny said, there are a lot of very good things to see around that area of Texas and some great food as lots of Germans settled there. Your not all that far from San Antonio and the Alamo too so that may be a city you would want to visit? I don't know of places for you to park your RV sice I don't have one, but I wouldn't miss New Braunfels Smokehouse either. We have bought smoked meats from there for many years! Someone in my family will order from them at least one time every year!

If you happen to get all the way to San Antonio there is some great mexican food and much more at a place called Mi Teria which has been there for ever. It's just a few blocks from the river walk. I go every time I get to that city! They also have a full bakery inside with all kind of authentic mexican sweets. I will see what else I can think of.

Hi revitup, I live in Austin area and call Granger my home lake. We have three local guides on the lake and would recommend any one of them. (PM me for links to their web sites.) I have fished Granger and LBJ for crappie and both are good crappie lake. LBJ however is a busy recreational lake during summer and warm weather weekends. Can make fishing tough. Granger has two nice RV areas and swimming beaches, but not much else for kids to do. With that said, kayaking up Willis Creek is a lot of fun. If you stay at Granger, I would recommend Fox Park. Has a fishing pier and cleaning station. Granger is about 30 min from Austin and you can get to the tollways which can get you almost anywhere. Check out www.GrangerGang.com. Not a busy web sight, but Granger specific.

Keep in mind that Lake Travis is about 50+ feet low so access to water can be difficult and rush hour traffic can be a problem.

A lot of people have mentioned a lot of things to do, so I want duplicate. If you are out to try BBQ, Lockhart TX has three BBQ joints that are always brought up when BBQ is discussed in TX. Taylor TX, near Granger Lake, has award winning Louie Mueller's BBQ. Home of the 1lb beef ribs. Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lakes downtown are nice and would recommend for recreation type activities. Lot of kayaking and SUP available there.

PM me if you have any specific questions. Would be glad to answer. Maybe we can even hookup for a day on the water.
