You have Lake Conroe,Lake Houston, and Lake Livingston;a hour from H-town.NW Houston-Cypress-Katy Area.Nice place to live( my oldest sister resides in Bear Creek).Lakes Conroe and Houston are about an hours drive or less between the two lakes.Conroe has been blessed with a Great Crappie fishery. The last 5 years have been OUTSTANDING!Lake Houstons not too shabby either.Plus if you get bored with those papermouths, you have Galveston near by;I swear if you hook a Redfish, you will never want to fish for Bass again.Warning:Leave Road Rage in Missouri-You'll get SHOT!Get ready to sit in some Traffic Jams.

Lake Somerville is an hour fifteen fron NW Houston. Live there, and I can leave house and be in water fishing in that time frame. Good crappie, catfish lake. LMB's are starting to get good. White and Hybrids are excellent also.

Fayette County Reservoir is great for large mouth bass / Florida hybrids!
Somerville is awesome for Crappie!! Big Creek marina if you dont have a boat. There are a lot of hot spots if you do have a boat!!:D

I wouldn't rule out the north east side of Houston. Depending on where your bride is working, the drive may not be bad. If you are going into Houston from the NW the traffic is a lot worse than going in from the NE. I live NE of Houston in Huffman on Lake Houston. You may want to check out Kingwood or The Commons, in Huffman. I think you will find the price for new or used homes very affordable. You could go to HAR.com (Houston Association of Realtors) and plug in what you are looking for; single family, number of bedrooms, baths and price range and see what is available in what area you want to look at. You can buy a lot of home in the Houston area for the money.
    Good luck.....

Hey Adjust, here's some inside info from someone who spent nearly 10 years there.

Buy a home as close to your Wife's job as possible. You don't want to commute any further than you have to. You will be amazed at how long it could take you to make it from The Woodlands to Spring in the mornings! If she'll be in Spring, buy a home there! I know that a 10 or 15 mile commute doesn't sound bad, but it could take here a half hour or more to get to work and then make it home.

I've drove in every major city in the U.S. New York, L.A. and Houston are by far, the worse! It's like Houstonians lose any manners they may have had when they get behind the wheel. And Dogrockit has it correct. A lot of them a-holes will shoot at you if you make 'em mad. Get your permit and be prepared to shoot back.

The area you're talking about has been experiencing a growth explosion ever since I moved there in 1999, even in this so called "down turn of the economy". No one told Houston that they were suppose to stop growing and creating jobs.

If you're not comfortable dealing with illegals, don't go. They're everywhere and you OWE them. Don't believe me? Ask one, they'll tell you!

Homes are probably a lot more expensive there than what you're used to. As a poster above pointed out, go to HAR.com and look at the areas you want to live in. Remember rule #1. Live as close to your job as you can!

Get a home inspection on your home before you buy. Especially if you're buying new construction! Don't be stupid and take your Realtor's recommendation. They're only out to make a commission. Terry Black is by far the best inspector in the business down there. Listen to him, he'll save you lots of money. Unlike most inspectors there, he doesn't rely on realtors sending him business (can you say conflict of interest?). He's been inspecting homes over 20 years and has a good following.

As for fishing, try and go on a weekday. With 4 million plus people in the area, Lake Conroe is a freakin' zoo during the day on the weekends. But then, so is Lake Livingston and Houston, but not as bad as Lake Conroe imho.

I'd suggest a trip down to the beach on the Bolivar Peninsula. Especially in the fall. Take surf tackle and fish for the sharks, big Redfish (30+ pounds) and Black drums (big uglies). This type of fishing and offshore fishing are two of the things I really miss.

The flounder fishing isn't bad, but I'm not sure if they've closed Rollover pass as they were talking about after hurricane Ike. If it's still open, you can get into some fantastic flounder fishing in the fall. Flounder and Snapper are two fish that I think give Crappie a run for the money. Especially after you've soaked your Flounder or Snapper fillets in Italian seasoning for an hour or so and then throw them on a grill over hot mesquite coals!

Go to the Texas Saltwater message board. Those folks will treat you right. Loads of info on how to fish off the beach. Look for post by Jolly Roger. He's one of the nuts who fish for sharks out of kayaks...they post some awesome pics! 2coolfishing.com is also a great board!

Oh, and don't expect to have 4 seasons like you do now. You'll have hot and humid weather 9 to 10 months out of the year and 'kinda cool and wet' the rest of the time. You might get a few days in the 70's between these two periods if you're lucky!

And if you every have to evacuate because of a Hurricane...oh man, I pity you! We ran from everyone except Ike. Heck, they'd been wrong every other time...I figured they were wrong then too!

What else would you like to know? :D
