Danger on Ft. Loudon
Had a friend call me yesterday to tell me about something he witnessed last weekend. There is a certain former Tenn football player who has bought a hugh boat excess of 75 feet that will go upwards of 100mph. The good thing is he said he heard it coming for 5 min before it got to where he was. The bad thing is it puts out a wake of around 5 ft and if you are traveling toward it. It is very dangerous. Plus he said the people operating it were indangering other boaters. If I'm correct there is no speed limit on water, but with a craft like this maybe there should be. This craft is docked around the Louisville area so if anyone else has seen or witnessed this barge maybe they can pass on what they have seen.

You ought to be on Lake Wylie or Lake Norman near Charlotte NC on a Saturday from June through August. One rich superstar on Ft. Loudon, count your blessings! You can't swing a dead crappie without hitting one on either of those lakes during that time period. My boat went into hybernation for the summer because of it. It is nothing to see 30 of those 30' - 40' (and bigger) cigarrette style boats (Fountain, etc...) racing on those lakes. Poker runs, for boats, are common. God help you if you are in the way. My Triton will run right at 70 mph. Rarely do I go over about 45 or 50, hard to believe I know, but true. But I have had them blow by me when I'm tail walking at 70. Most of the time the driver is not really paying attention and his passengers are all hammered. At least they make them crawl under bridges. Otherwise there isn't much slowing them down. It really is a scary at times. As I said, just be grateful that you only have one - for now .

There is a massive boat I see on Watts Bar from time to time. It's a black and white yacht and it's almost like the motor isn't big enough on it. It throws a massive wake, unlike anything I've ever seen. It got close to me once and I tried to point the bow into the waves and when I did, it put water over the bow and into the boat. If I see it coming now, I try to get as far away as possible or try to duck into a cove. The guy driving it is young and doesn't care about other boaters.

I think their hands are tied
Being there is no speed limit. they would only maybe ticket them for wreckless operating or something of that nature. Maybe if someone reports it thay can slow them down. This big boat that you are talking about was on Chickamauga last year and a friend of mine hit his wake with his bass boat and it destroyed his boat and broke his back. Lucky someone was close and pulled him out. He was off work for 9 mo.

boat operators are responsible for their wake and any damage it may cause

Sorry to hear about your friend. I just don't see why you would need such a large, violent, boat on our local waterways. I guess it's just to show off. We all need to keep our eyes open; there are alot of knuckleheads on the water.
