    Go figure
I have been saying this for years. They both are greedy but in different ways. The state wants the tax and tourism dollars and the land owners want to get paid for their trouble. Thing is, this should have been settled 20 years ago back when the corps of engineers wanted to do a drawdown of the lake and give it an overhaul. The landowners and business owners had a hissy fit over it and so it has dragged on and on until the very real possibility of Reelfoot no longer being around exists. If the spillway goes, so does the lake.

That is to build a new one.

Now they are fighting over to have a bridge/spillway or have the bridge and spillway seperate.

I noticed last week when I was there that there is a lot of lakefront property for sale. Anyone out there think that people might be trying to sell before something bad happens to the spillway or their property taxes go up? I just don't know that I have ever seen so much property for sale at the same time.

It is interesting to see what is going to happen. I think it makes more sense to seperate the two. I think the spillway would be in better shape if you didnt have people driving over it constantly. And something else I was wondering, I assume they are going to have to remove the old spillway and bridge. How is traffic going to get across? I sure would hate to have to put in on the south end to fish Kirby pocket, or drive the other way through hornbeak. And the tourists would have trouble. I may be just not thinking clearly at the moment. But it seems like a small problem. Im dumb.....

It's a shame that this is about a few property owners and not about a valuable ecosystem that will never be reproduced once it is gone. SHAME ON EM' ALL!!!

They are going to leave the old spillway and fill the ditch leading to the lake.

The new one will be west of the old one.

The ones throwing the fit want some money, they say they own land that is covered by water because they keep the water 2 feet higher than what is was 70 years ago.

No, the 1.27 million bid was to repair the old one until a new one could be built.
Government does not solve problems; it subsidizes them.

Those folks are going to have a hard time making their claim. They will have to produce reciepts showing they paid property tax on that land. If they can't, they are out of luck.

Didn't think 1.2M was enough to build a new bridge/spillway. Dement is an excellent group to work with. I worked with them on I-40 in Nashville. The reason they can outbid people is because they finish early. if there is any incentives, they get them. The scheduled completion date for the job I worked with them on was May 07. They finished in Oct 06 to a tune of $8500 a day incentive for completing it early. The owner is also a duck hunter so I'd say he likes the Foot.
