    Default Short crappie trip. 5/21/19

My fishing partner, Phil Gawthrop, only had time to help me at daybreak to put out the last bamboo hotel that I had in my driveway. We determined to quit fishing at 8 am, unless the fish were biting.

We fished until 8:40 and had to stop. He had a ten o’clock appointment. But we landed 13 keepers and I had a tarp that I’m calling 15”. If the tail was fanned, it would barely touch the 15” mark. The fish weighed 1.8 on digital scales. I released this fish much to the chagrin of Dr Phil. I told him that if he had caught it, then he could keep it. Lolol.

We ended up on a bamboo hotel that I put out alone last week. I picked a great spot. I landed 5 nice keepers there and Phil lost one at the boat. We had a bass boat near us and I’m sure that they were getting ready for the upcoming tournament this weekend, and they watched us like a hawk land these fish. They were about 50 yards away from us though.

The hot lure was a BG Slab Slayer in Screamer color. Phil caught his fish on Full Moon BGSS. TVA was running 26,000+ cfs when I checked it early. Wind was light and from the North. Fish came out of 25 feet of water, but were suspended over the tops of the bamboo about 10-12 feet deep. We caught 6 smaller keepers on a bluff upriver, but there was so much trash floating down the bluff that we finally got tired of making a cast, then cleaning the jig, and casting again.
