Well, the steering motor for my Terrova still hasn't come in, so I'm at the mercy of friends with boats. Today, Gary Fomby took me fishing in his very nice Ranger for about 4 hours of crappie fishing. We didn't get two limits, but we did get 21 keepers and lost a few others at the boat. I had a very big fish on that broke my line after about 30 seconds. Didn't feel like a bass. It felt like a big crappie. Should have used my uni-knot instead of the loop knot.
Water temp was 80 degrees and slight wind out of the SE and TVA running 47,000 CFS, so it made it challenging to fish off shore, but we did anyway. Caught most of our fish off shore on cuts in the delta structure. For those of you who don't know what a delta structure is, Buck Perry defined this as the old river banks before a reservoir was impounded. Find a creek or ditch that cuts into the delta to the main river and you have found a prime fishing spot. Buck Perry says that it is the best structure to fish. Of course, he was talking about Bass, but it works the same for crappie.
Bobby Garland plastics (Bayou Booger), Emerald Shad, and Outlaw Special worked. So did Bass Assassin Chicken on a Chain. This is the lure that the big fish broke off on. After the fish slowed down or stopped biting, we ran to a bluff and fished. Only caught one keeper there and lost another keeper at the side of the boat.
If the weather man is correct this time (doubt it), this may be my last time to fish this week. Being a weather man and being wrong 90% of the time is the only job where you can fail so much and still get paid. No wonder that they are always smiling. I still think that they ought to go outside early in the morning and look at the big rock before making their predictions. Forget computer models. Computer models do not drive the winds. Only God does that. Grin. I have one pic of some crappie tools. Litewirehooks.com Give Curtis Hobbs a call and tell him that Drumking sent you. I powder painted the jigs.
