Nice slabs CP!
They're few and far between, but when you get a keeper ... it's HUGE
Here's 4 of the 5 we caught this morning, before heading home :
Those are 14-15" fish ... and yes, they are THAT THICK across the back.
Caught mostly females (black & white crappie), with runny eggs. However, not many males on the banks.
All fish caught over/in fallen trees, in 10-20fow ... casting or "Vertical Casting" jigs.
It has been a strange spring! Eggs look right, water temps are right, males "dressed for the party." However, I have caught very few near the bank. Is it coming, is it ending? I am a bit confused.....
Same deal as last year for me .... egg laden females out over 20-30fow and no males on the bank. And we were there a week earlier than this time, last year.
Water temps are high, unless they nest deep. Depth finder was showing a "thermocline" of sorts at about 5ft ... so, the cooler water may have them nesting 8-10ft deep (unless the rains cool the water down quite a bit & color the water up. We had nearly 3ft depth visibility in most of the places we fished. Bass were all over the banks, nesting in that 72-75deg water.
The males we caught (Black Crappie) were still sporting their tux's ... so I don't know if they were guarding nests or still waiting on the females. We caught Blacks/Whites out of the same trees, at approx. the same depths, so there may be some hybridization happening if the females aren't real picky
They've gotten off "some" spawns a few years ago, because we did catch almost as many <10" fish as we did keepers. There was just a huge gap in their sizes
U need to bring a few of them over to Ky Lake so someone can re-catch em.
