    Default Curious ?

After a successful trip to Tellico last week, I felt like yesterday (Wed 2/11) was positioned to be the perfect day. Temps were heading to mid 50's, light wind, and pre cold front. Water temp was 42 - 46. Well, for me anyway, it didn't work as planned! I finished the day with only 7 keepers. The bite was very light, almost unnoticeable. The fish were more scattered and were more shallow. Following some very good advice, I am now keeping a journal, but do not have the history to compare yet. While 7 is not bad, I expected better. Did anyone else get fooled yesterday? On a side note, one female "shot" eggs. Is that odd for this time of year? Please bear with me as I try to learn!

Sounds like a pretty good day to me considering the luck I have had this year so far. As far as eggs the females should be getting full for the spawn. Catching them shallow is a good thing. Have heard nothing but deep for awhile now.

I had a female shoot eggs on me 2 weeks or so ago. It's been interesting for myself as well because all my records indicate that the large females should be coming into "my" creek by now but, I've not caught a single crappie there yet. This year I'm seeing a very inconsistent pattern in that I can go to a spot for a trip or 2 and catch them within yards of each other and then the next trip they've vanished and this is fishing 3 days in a row. Keep after them and keep on your journal and you'll figure them out.

Down on Chickamauga we felt same (positioned as a perfect day), and for us, it was. See: http://www.crappie.com/crappie/tenne...s-chickamauga/

    Go figure?

I've always said that there is a lot more we don't know about fish and fishing than what we do know. As for "shooting" eggs, certainly haven't seen that down here. In fact, not sure I've ever seen it. Later in year lots of females super-fat with eggs, but really not sure I've ever seen any shoot.

In other words, I am clearly no help at all to you.

I didn't even hold the crappie that squirted the eggs on me tight in my hand. She "shot" about a tea spoon full in my hand and she wasn't swelled like she was full or ready to spawn. I've had plenty of males squirt milt on me but, I believe she was the first to "egg" me. LOL!!

Fishorhunt, if they are fooling you some, I don't have a chance! I really do appreciate the journal idea. I'm sure it will pay big dividends down the road. Question, do you always include minnows in your arsenal? Rsimms, congrats on a great day!

I always have minnows with me on Tellico. There are times when I don't use them tho. Once I find a school of crappie feeding heavy I try to go without them but when I'm searching I always tip with a minnow. Its just good insurance.

Thanks for the reply Fishorhunt. I always try to have them as well, and have ran out more than once. They are a little pricey, especially when you end up setting 2 or 3 dozen free! I am aware of 3 places that sell them on 411 between my house and the lake. Lucky's (usually out, but lots of bang for the buck, pay for 2 dozen get 5 or 6! Probably why they are always out!), Brickmill market, and Sloan's. Do you know of any that I missed?

I only go to Sloans anymore. I have a well fed cattle trough that I keep my extra in. I also have 3 minnow traps set but their not catching anything right now.

Ahh! I need to come up with a system for my extras. Also thought about the traps. May give that a try and see if I can hide em well enough to not get stolen!
