Default Anyone caught short crappie on JPP this year?

I have been out several times this year on Percy Priest trolling crank baits for crappie. Every crappie we have caught has been at least 10.5 inches long. I haven't caught any short fish at all this year and I find that to be a bit unusual compared to the last few years. Is anyone else seeing the same trend? Has anyone caught a number of short crappie that had to be released? I am wondering if we had a poor recruitment class a few years back.

I made this post on another thread at an earlier date. Your right , "Things are Better"

Al B. is a great guy. They have done a great job protecting the fishery. Also the fishermen have followed the rules which is why we have had a super year so far on PP and Old Hickory.

A big ol THANKS to all that did their part.-------- MidTin

I went 5/31 and all crappie were 10'' plus. That is a good sign. I was trolling cranks.

I have had only 2 throwbacks that were 9 1/2 this year so far. Last year i was catching a lot of 9in fish. Seems they have grown up this year.

I seem to catch the 9 to 9.75" fish up here on Tellico. Might catch a couple good ones at 11+, but the rest will shorts/dinks. Glad its good down your way.
    GO BIG ORANGE !

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.

I agree TWRA does a fine job with the fishery. What I'm thinking is that we should be catching some short fish - those are next year's or the year after's keepers. Are we going to see a decrease in the keeper crappie numbers in a year or two? I hope not. I'll be going again on Saturday. Sure, I want to catch the bigger fish, but I'd like to know that we have good recruitment classes for future years as well.

I caught 21 keepers at JPP yesterday and about 30 short fish. Only a couple of those pesky yellow bass. Size in the last two years have improved. The short fish came after the keeper fish were caught from a spot.
