Default Where to Look in January

Hello all, I fish Murray most all the time for bass and occasionally crappie. Sometimes i go to Greenwood for crappie in winter. I am planning to start crappie fishing again in two weeks. Is it best to start looking for them in the main channel at the mouth of creeks? Or would it be best to go part way into creeks before channel searching? I know brush would likely be best, but i dont have many brush piles marked to target. I am setup for tight line, spider rigging or long line. I assume its too early to long line effectively for a bit. I would prefer to tight line using my active target. Just got a new set of millennium double sidekick chair mounts.

Blow downs in creeks would be a good place to start

If I idled around in a creek and found enough fish and bait to give it a try I'd probably spider rig with minners.

I know that in both Greenwood and Murray upper river channels are great in winter thru early spring. Target ledges with abrupt depth swings during cold weather, look for staging fish in the main channel during idle weather. Brush or structure located within the channel is always a good place to focus on as well

I have good days fishing the upper channels in the cold months but also like fishing a foot or two off the bottom in deep water. Most of the time you don't see the fish on the screen but they are there.

Be sure to look around the bridges too. Last Saturday on Norman, we caught most of our fish on the columns in the shade.

Check around boat docks near deep water. If they have brush piles under/or near the dock a definite plus. If you have side finding capabilities on your fish locator, you will eliminate a lot of empty docks. But keep looking, there will be a dock loaded eventually.
