I've caught some of those in the past.
I just figured they had just been in deep water for awhile. If I remember correctly the ones I caught were in water deeper than 30ft.
Maybe I can catch some more now that I'm back in Gastonia and will be fishing Wylie again.

I think you could be right. Growing up in South Alabama, we did not have lakes deep enough to see fish like that. When I look at that picture of the one with the stripe compared to the black crappie, you can see that same lateral line, just fainter. Maybe it shows up more when they go deep and lose color. The lateral lines sense vibration, so maybe it gets more developed in deep fish where they have to depend on it more since there is less light for visual?

As for the OP. Looks like a fish thats stayed in deep/muddy water until it was caught. Nothing abnormal looking about it IMO.

Most likely a White Crappie that came from deep. The tail and fins with no spots look like white perch. I have seen many crappie just from the deep and they are pale and don't have that shiny scales. I am used to pale white scales. Poor fellow was lost coming down from upper lake. He wanted to hang out with the blacks at lower end. I have cleaned many a crappie since the 1980's and this one just sense different. Maybe age is creeping in. O well thanks for the feedback.
