The rule of thumb is 7' of line for each foot of water.
hey all...
another newbie question....
how much anchor rope do you have per anchor?
how deep is too deep to be anchored down?
thanks,
Pierce
The rule of thumb is 7' of line for each foot of water.
I keep 150' per anchor and usually anchor anywhere from 20'-40' deep with no problems.

If I were to buy a anchor line I would buy a 150 foot one 3/8 " diameter or 1/2" diameter depending on the size of your boat.
I'll put out an anchor and get that one dug in (chene type anchor) and let out all of the 150' of rope and then lower the other anchor. After hanging that one I'll split the difference in the ropes in the bucket and try to get the boat setting in the middle of the two anchors. When using flat steel anchors I also do the same, setting the boat equally between the two anchors. Holds tighter/better with the ropes at such an angle. Sometimes I wished I had another 50' on each end of my ropes. Personally, I wouldnt go less than 150' each but you gonna find out that anchor rope is expensive!

Make sure you go ahead and spend the extra money on a good quality rope too. I lost an anchor a few months ago, because I was using a cheap rope(the nylon type). I new I needed to change it out, but waited too long. Sitting there fishing and saw my rope floating with no anchor attached.
Probably because that ga peachie "beagler" came by and jinxed me. :p

i use two 150 ft 3/8 in twisted nylon rope on my boat. you can get it at wally world on spools for about 25 bucks each. store the rope in 5 gallon buckets to keep it from tangling.
listen with your eyes---its the only way to beleive what you hear...
I tried night fishing for stripers on Hartwell last night but got ran off by the storm. The water there was between 130 and 140 ft deep. I dropped my back anchor, it plummeted for what seemed like 5 minutes, then struck. I backed away until my rope was used up, and dropped the front anchor. It fell and fell and never reached bottom because my front rope had been shortened!:D I sat there embarassed while it dangled off the bow above the bottom!
I don't even want to think how much rope ($$$) one "should" have to set two anchors in 140-150 ft of water!!
