Have any of you guys ever paid much attention to what the crappie you caught are eating? Well, if you have and you seen brown mush in their bellies then theyre feeding on grass shrimp. That's a GREAT bait this time of the year that congregates the crappie to a particular part of the lake when theyre there. I dont see many whole shrimp but I have seen them in the throats of a crappie a few times. Just so you know this is what they look like...
Lately Burdawg, a member here, sent me a few of his jig ties and I wanna tell ya they are "killer" replicating the grass shrimp to the crappie.
Ive been fishing with these jigs for a couple weeks now and I can tell ya if you are a jig fisherman and dont own any of his jigs them then you need a few. These jigs have been getting hit HARD! Here's a pic of a few variations of the shrimp jigs Ive been experimenting with...
I dont know if most of you guys know or not, but I'm a curly tail jig fisherman. I recommend any color with a chartruese tail. HA! That said...I'm hooked on these tied jigs now, especially when May rolls around. These jigs have been getting nailed while longlining lately. Contact Burdawg if you wanna try some of his jigs. He makes all kinds and colors but be sure to get you a few of these for this time of the year.

That's a good-looking jig. Thanks for the idea that's rolling around in my head now! Just what I needed another thought to try to hold on too!
What speed would be best to pull at? I believe I could get my chicken foot mold and make some in brown and cream color and cut the feet off and add a couple of colored rubber bands for legs and arms.
Ingenuity working in the brain tonight will keep me up all night!
Dawg, I think it all depends on how deep of water youre fishing and at what depth most of the biting fish are holding at. Give ya what I did on my last trip....fish were holding at @ 10' deep with some near the botton in 15' of water. Caught some early in the AM and then they quit. Clicker said 25 caught and the bite had died. So I decided to rig double 1/16ths which usually run around 13' deep at .8 mph but I pulled them at 1.0 and 1.1 to get the jigs up to those fish holding @ 10' deep. Those were the feeding fish and not the ones near the bottom. Finished the morning catching 55 fish and bringing a Ga limit to the house.
