    Default Depth Finder

Check out this thread and reply if you know anything about these. If I'm barking up the wrong tree looking at these two units let me know BEFORE I order either of them so I wont have any regrets. Thanks guys.

I couldn't get a link to work so...

    New Depth Finder: Delemma?!?

OK, here is my deal. (I havent looked at depth finders since I bought a Lowrance LM 522 many years ago. Well, the corners are turning black and the unit is starting to go out. So, that said, I'm now looking at something else.

At work we have this rewards program. We get "points" for various thing and mine has collected over the years. So I decided to check out Hummingbird units. Here's what they offer...

First is the Hummingbird 9 Chirp DI and GPS. (Pics)

    and description...

I'm more leaning towards SI too so this is the unit offered there...

    and description...

Now I'm assuming the first unit is a Gen 2 unit but the description on the "8" doesn't say. Guys, I'm sorta "lost". I know I'm going to have to contact somebody for some answers but not really sure what questions to ask. Does either come with cables and transducer, and which transducer do they come with (I'm assuming more than one can be bought for the SI unit?!?)? If none offered what will I need to buy and what will they cost me? Is the "8" a Gen 2 or Gen 3?

Help me out guys. When I do get somebody on the phone what do I need to be asking them? I'm not familiar with HB at all. Thanks in advance.

GA I believe they are both gen3 due to the fact they are megas. Either would be a big step up from the 522. I personally would but the 8 and these can be linked to the right trolling motors. They also should have everything needed to hook up and use, probably mega skimmer style transducers.

I just got a Helix 7 Gen 3. It came with everything needed to hook up. Side image and down image in one transducer. Wanted bigger but my mounting spot wont take much more than the 7. So far I like it. Aint used it much due to weather and water and that nasty work thing. Good luck deciding !

Oh. I just thought the G2N meant generation 2. So, with MEGA then they are Gen 3?

Ga. I run the Helix 10 mega chirp DI it came with all the mounting her and transducer. The only cable I would have to purchase is the one from the troller to the HB unit you wanted them to communicate

The 7 says that but not the 8, I actually am not sure on it but I bet Rickie in the fish finder forum would know for sure.

The 9 is a generation 2 networkable and only has down imaging in mega. The 8 is a gen 3 mega side imaging + This will be the better of the two if you are wanting mega side imaging as well as mega down imaging. They should come with everything you need transducer and cable wise. Gen 2 did have mega, as it is what I have. Gen 3 was mega imaging + and they came out with the 7s and 8s in mega during that gen

In my experience, you get better mapping from Lowrance and better imaging from Humminbird. As for what you want, i agree with going with the HB as the imaging is more important than the mapping i would think. Linking to your TM is the ticket tho. I have my lowrance unit networked with my MG Xi5 on my crappie boat. Even tho i have taken my bass boat out for crappie every trip this year so far.

I'm looking too Butch, and right now I'm trying to get up the courage to pull the trigger on either the G3N Mega 9 or 10 inch. It's a lot o' money for a civil servant like myself, but I sure like what I see from other folks' screen captures, and the idea of side imaging to find a brush pile or spot crappie under a dock sounds mighty appealing. I was totally disappointed in DI and SI on my Helix 7 gen 1, but it looks like they've come a long way since then.

William, I'm still running that same old Lowrance LMS 522 that you picked up for me at Academy how many year ago. HA! I hate that it's biting the dust but like everything I guess nothing lasts forever. If I get one of these units atleast I'll have something t play with when the crappies aint biting.
