Default Today Mighta Finished My Year!

I was at the ramp unloading as first light broke. It was just past daybreak when I reached my fishing spot and lines going in the water. By the time three rods was in the water I had fish on! It was a small one but it was a fish.

It got fast and furious in a hurry! I had doubles and triples and even caught doubles on a single line (double jigs per line) with multiple rods being pulled back at once. Most were 6"-11" fish but it was busy to say the least. Anyway, the flurry lasted until just after sunup. By that time I had @ 45 on the clicker.....yea, hard to keep hitting that clicker it was so busy! Rods EVERYWHERE in the boat...it was fun while it lasted! Then it ended!!
Who woulda thunk! I trolled another 2 hours trying to put something together but it never really happened....picking up one here, one there. Finished the morning @ 9:30 with 61 on the clicker with @ 20 decent fish in the well. I had started keeping fish 10" and better since my son was trolling and wanted fish on the bone to eat. Problem was I waited too late to start saving for him and most were even too little to keep to eat off the bone.

I wasn't wanting to clean fish. I brought a mess home to fillet for me and the Mrs. (7 pretty decent fish, actually two more than I wanted). The rest was given to my son so he had some to freeze on-the-bone. I MIGHT give it another go just to "scratch the itch" but after looking at what was caught today this MIGHT be my last trip of the season....dunno yet.

I will say that with limited times to fish this year it has been GREAT! Lots of nice limits caught and have been able to give some good messes to the older families that lets me deer hunt their properties and plenty to my Dad and his wife. We also enjoyed a few family fish fries on both my side of the family and the wife's side. That,,, and my feeezer has enough fish in it to carry me until @ Jan of next year.

To all those continuing to fish....good luck to ya! I wish ya the best of luck. Just be careful in that heat.

Today's Stats….fished from 6AM until 9:30AM boating a total of 61 crappie. finished the morning with 23 fish in the livewell including the 17 I gave my son to clean for fish to eat off the bone. IMO, like any other day, another GREAT day spent on the water!

Problem I have with that is I have a renewed interest into bow hunting since I got a crossbow (hence: Ga "bowman") and the deer season opened in early September. that knocks me out from fishing until mid January so I have put plenty of fillets in the freezer so hopefully they'll carry me thru December before running out. Matter of fact, I spent this afternoon cutting the dying wheat and oats down in my food plots getting ready to spray 'em to kill everything and let the corn feeders do their thing. Seems it's either fishing or deer hunting on my mind almost always nowadays.

A very good season of crappie fishing Butch. You have showed that you can catch fish even with limited time to be on the water..

you sure did get into them. This time of year, I had to get out before sun up and fish until 0930am. The wife liked it as I would scratch the fishing itch and not be gone all day. For me, It was too hot for this midwesterner to be fishing in that heat.

Great report Butch! I hope it'll cool a bit so you can enjoy another morning or two out there.

I can completely agree with Butch's dead-on assessment of the fast daybreak trolling bite slowing to almost nothing by 9-9:30. But when I take families that want to fish until noon (or even later, whew!) I have to get really creative to keep them on fish. It often requires a change of techniques and a switch to species like white and yellow perch. They are smaller but often seem unfazed by the brutal heat. Most times the fishermen and fisherwomen fade before the perch fishing quits. But I never argue when people tell me they've had enough and are ready to head in!!
