I am in no way a knowledgable person in comparison to the majority on this site, but I have been succesful the last few weeks out with several limits.

The last two weeks 1/8 oz jigheads starting out the mouth of coves to halfway back has been the ticket, but after cleaning all those from last week I am planning on moving to 1/16 oz. Those fish were getting ready to spawn, coupled with the bite fell off as the water warmed up, I am figuring they started to move up the water column.

    Good Luck

So I get the speed thing and trolling thing but how do you know how much line is out. Do you just cast as far as you can and pull them from there?

I measured from my reel to my first eye on my rods. Locked my speed at .7 in 10FOW. Counted how many times I pulled line from the reel to the first eye on my rod until my jig started bumping the bottom. Did that at 10', 20' and 30'FOW. Multiply the distance b/w reel and rod eye by the number of pulls. That will let you know "how much line is out."

I am less scientific about it. I just cast it as far as I can. I did take a few hours on the first trip to test the depth the jigs ran by pulling on a gradual point and noting depth when they started to hit bottom. Again I am no expert, but I dont see an issue if the jigs are running a few feet diffrent due to line length, etc. I speculate the jig weight, geometry, and speed makes much more diffrence than diffrences of 10ft. ???

If you don't feel like longlining just shoot docks. If ppl are longlining deeper water shoot deeper docks if ppl longlining shallows shoot the shallows ... these crappie could be anywhere right now. I caught some in crowders last weekend 7ft water docks then caught more same day 20 ft trolling. I love crappie fishing
