But when I dropped a minnow or spoon, the bite was immediate. After catching a couple, the graph is often "lit up" with a cloud of them. They were nearly invisible before the first couple bit and got the school active. So my advice would be to try a few areas with small minnows, whether you see much or not. Perch are typically pretty aggressive, and you'll know if they are there quickly. Good luck!
Just what he said, they will be so close to the bottom that you want notice them, if you have down imaging, you will see them, once you catch one or two they will come up off the bottom and fill the depth finder up! Before down imaging it was hard for me to find them sometimes.

This morning I found them just above mills creek on the left in the mouth of the next little creek in 18 to 20 feet of water, caught about 20 in ten minutes and left. On worms. I hate minnows, want use them.

I totally agree that down scan helps a ton to find them. It really helps me distinguish them from bait, because perch and shad often look similar on traditional sonar. usually they are right on the bottom but if you ever see a "Christmas tree" of them coming up off the bottom you have found the mother load. I went to Greenwood Saturday afternoon and we caught 70 to 80 before dark on little 1/4 oz jigging spoons on ultralight spin. It was a lot of fun.
