    Default Variable Speed Trolling Motor

I have a 15’ semi V bottom jon boat. I’m looking for a 36” shaft variable speed trolling motor and the selection for smaller boats are slim. I found a MotorGuide X3 digital 55 lb thrust, but it’s recommended for 16’-19’ boats. I currently have a 30 lb thrust motor. I obviously do not need a 55 lb thrust, but my question is if I got it, how slow will they run? If I’m trolling, I do not want it to be over powered.

I would think you should be able to hold .3-.5mph, without a tailwind in calm water. I have a 55 lb thrust on my 15ft jon boat and I can hold those speeds without problem

Here is one that will work for you. It will run pretty slow for trolling. Plus it is variable speed with maximizer for longer battery life. May not be best price but this is what I would get.

I should have included, that I’m looking for a foot controlled motor. That’s where it really narrows down the search. I looked at Minn Kota first and found one I wanted, but I don’t think it’s available anymore.

Get a 55 lb. Minn Kota power drive. Then get a hand remote from Marc Danque at the Crappie Hole in Chapin SC. You can set trolling speed as slow as you wish. Don't look at it as over powering, look at it as allowing to you troll in wind and current.

I also use a minn kota 55lb variable speed on a 15 foot jon and it works well. Highly recommend. Low battery draw too.

I moved my Ipilot to my 15' foot small skiff. It is 55# thrust. It will run as slow as you could possibly want, the smaller boat gives you more reserve. Wide open it is only 1/2 MPH faster than the heavier boat I had it on, but on lowest speed it is barely .1 MPH.

As far as foot controll, I used one for 40 years so I got the Terrova model that has foot control and wireless remote. Once I got use to the remote, the foot pedal has never been hooked up.

I looked at the Terrova online. The shortest shaft length is 45”, which may not be an issue. My biggest concern with having a light boat with a 55 lb thrust may not allow me to run as low as .8 mph.

Thank you all for the replies.
