Never bank fished but imagine some weight a couple feet above some cut bait or live bait using the current and using a railing or v stick as a rod holder may do the ticket, in mn we would even put clip on bells for the night on the rod tip river fishing for catfish. I would think 12lbs would do just fine. I usually get cats crappie fishing on even crappie minnows but probably not ideal way to target them.
There is Allison creek pier on Wylie where this critter came from
Oh I could wrestle a monster fishBigDawgg LIKED above post
You can catch them bigger if you use perch for bait. Braid line would be better off the pier I would think because there are brush piles all around in front and close to the pier. Couple ounces will get you out farther from the pier with a good chunk of bait. A friend of mine caught a nice flat head there in the 20 pound class. If you fish the pier ask for Billy ( cutbait on here ) he can tell you about the pier and where to throw a line or two! He catfishes also! Where ever you decide I hope you have good luck.
On Wateree I would suggest Wateree state park or the landing down by the air force campground. I’ve caught them from shore using whole bream. In Santee I have caught more blues on white plastic worms and white spinner baits. Would look into the hatchery there.

Thank you @BigDawgg. I am going to bring one of my inshore shark rods and a couple other inshore saltwater fishing rods to fish for blue catfish. Have not caught a flathead catfish and its on my bucket list of fish to catch. Have not caught white perch either so it will be nice catching them and I will use them for bait. Also read that gizzard shad, blueback herring, and chicken breast makes good blue catfish bait. Chicken breast will catch sharks as well in South Florida and is a good alternative bait if you don't have fresh cutbait.
