    Default Longlining?

    I’ve a ? for you guys.
When longlining why do we typically use a lot of line (say 60ft) and a very light jig (1/16,1/8) , instead of say 1/2 ounce weight with a jig behind it and (guessing here) 30 ft of line.
Seems to me less line = less tangles?

    Thanks

You wouldn't be long lining then, it would be short lining. Maybe less tangles if you turn slowly. What speed were you planning to use? Sounds like you want to tight line with that set up, with adjusting the speed to get the depth you want!

Sounds like a cross between longlining and tightlining. You may be onto something. Give it a shot and let us know how it works. Tightlining is usually done from the front of the boat at speeds slow enough to keep the bait in front of the boat. Tightlining is behind the boat at a distance maybe far enough away that the boat does not spook the fish. I don't know if this would matter or not with the method you suggest but the jigs would be close to the boat and just after it passed over the fish. I know hybrids will sometimes hit a lure just a few feet behind the boat in the prop wash so maybe it is not that big of a deal.

Short lining would probably be good for deep cold fish with heavier weights. Could short line with 1/32 if they were shallow. I’m guessing like most things, someone was successful with that much line out and it just seemed right. The heavier weights are more unforgiving than the lighter ones as well.

U could do that but if u use a half ounce jig head u better have a lot of them cause u going to be hung up most of the time unless u are trolling in 50 feet of water

    Default Longlining?

I suppose you might spook the fish that are only 5 ft deep but I think my problem is usually getting a 1/16 oz down to the fish at 20ft,
I’ll try it, see what happens.
At the least, alternating rods with 30 ft and 60 ft out should minimize tangles.

Putting crimped on lead to increase depth is common for deep fish. Another option is to rig up with two jigs about 18" apart. The lead will not spook the fish. I use 3/4 ounce for all my tight lining, and this includes water 3 feet or less deep. The method you speak of will work in deep, open water. This is not new, many folks push jigs and cranks and use large lead to hold the lines more vertical. The clearer the water, the more space you will need between jig and lead. A bass lure like a Gay Blade, or Little George can be substituted for the lead and serve as another attractant to the fish.

We are basically talking about a "downrigger" approach which should work....
