    Default The Eclipse of 1970

My wife and I were talking about the coming eclipse and l shared with her l was crappie fishing Santee when we had another eclipse. We goggled the date was March 7, 1970.
A high school friend l grew up fishing with we would put his grandfather's 9.9 Johnson short shaft motor and tank in trunk of car and drive down to Potatoe creek or Goat Island and rent a boat for the day.
We had been going to Santee fishing with family members since we were kids and learned what when and where to fish in the spring months.
I remember on that eclipse day we were fishing out of Potatoe creek as we had to follow the white rags tied to bushes that had a short cut to a ridge drop off on the main body.
I don't remember the crappie limit back then, but we caught our cooler full on that day as we watched what we thought was birds going to roast as it go darker.
We used 9 foot fly rods with monofiliment line with or without a cork depending on what we were fishing.
We also used long cane poles to fish the standing timber back then.
I need to add those places to my bucket list as soon as l get through going to heart rehab. So much water so little time. Hope to go back one day.
It's not the numbers or the size, it's the time spent on the water!

Thanks for the post ! It sounded like my life replayed and brought back great memories. In the mid 60's We would load the old 3.5 or 5 hp Johnson in the station wagon or truck and head to Potato Creek to fish. Rented a boat at Wyboo and fished the stumps and cypress trees for Crappie. Great memories !

Isn't great to live in a state where we have so many places to fish and as a child growing up in the 60-70's my friends and me would go to any water that was close. Good times and great memories and I agree that some of those places have more meanings than others and Secession & the Saluda River have many hours of my younger years and they still get their share of my time .
Enjoyed reading your post and thanks for sharing.

During that eclipse I was with uncle sugar in Vietnam trying to stay alive and eventually came back to South Carolina which I was able to do.
