He looks to be a big boy! If I didn't know what he was he could keep the fish. But most around here are banded water snakes. Hope I don't reel one up anytime soon.

I believe it is a banded water snake but hard to tell in that picture.

I think I read that he is a protect species in Illinois and it's a banded water snake.
