Hey folks,

I joined this forum specifically to say THANK YOU for all the great posts that are here, not just about crappie but other species as well. I grew up fishing the ocean coast and was bummed out when I moved inland for college, now I've been around Columbia for a number of years and it has always seemed like a hard place to fish without a boat. I just got a one (I love being out on the water, fishing or not), had Josh and Jeff over at Low Country boats build one for me - it's a 1748 with a Merc 30 tiller. If you see a guy and his small boy out and the boy insists on waving for as long as you are in sight that's me and my son (almost 6). We've have been out a handful of times now on Murray, caught a small striper and some small bluegills. Was doing research into better techniques and equipment for a variety of species and came across this forum, hopefully from what I'm learning we'll get some meat in the cooler next time. We've been launching at Shull Island, but are open to any suggestions about other lakes (monticello, wateree, lake succession, etc).

It looks like with warmer water temps coming crappie will be going deeper to brush, any other advice for the summer would be appreciated. I'm not looking to steal anybody's honeyhole, we can only go out two or 3 times a month right now - just looking to have a good time with my kid and something to feed the wife.

What type of fishing are you doing. The striper bite has been good down in Jakes cove. Crappie are on deep brush and are caught tight lining small minnows above the brush. White perch are everywhere and can be caught using small minnows and jigging flex spoons off the bottom.

I've been taking out a few rods, we caught the striper trolling a lure at 15 feet - 20 feet deep, but I take out light spinning gear too so will try some jigging back in the creeks. By Jakes cove you mean over by Jake's landing? Thanks

Try some of DNR trash piles for Crappie.

The striper are headed down the lake and yes I mean jakes landing. During the summer down rods is the most productive with some people trolling lures and umbrella rigs. Stop by lakeworld down by the damn on highway 6. And pick his brain. When I say down rods I mean using live herring fished straight under the boat.

You should get your son hooked up on some of the white perch the guys at Wateree are catching. Maybe someone will PM you and tell you a couple of points to fish and what you'll need. Theyre raking 'em in and it's doing the lake a favor getting them out of there.

Later in June we will have a get together for some night fishing for Striper around the Murray dam. Hopefully some of the guys from around the state will join us and you are welcome to jump in with us. More info later.
Also Big Dawg is setting up a Perch Jerk on Wylie June 23rd if you can make that. We usually have several youngsters join in and they manage to outfish the adults most of the times.
