    IMO running your jigs at 5' deep versus 8' deep isn't that much to worry about. At 8' you could be below the more aggressive fish though. If an aggressive fish is 8' deep he will come up to attack a jig running at 5' but if youre below that aggressive fish you'll NEVER get that bite. Just saying.....

    About the only time I want to be hitting the fish in the nose with a jig is post spawn when the water gets over 80*. The fish are much less likely to chase so you have to spoon feed 'em then.

    When I do this it's when I suspect the fish are holding deeper and they're not biting jigs at normal depths. For me adding a medium split shot puts me down around 12' - 15' and that works to locate fish that are willing to bite but either not seeing or not chasing my other jigs. Some days I only get bites on the deep ones.
