    Default Warmouth

Hey guys I have just recently been able to start lurking around the forum again. Last week I was catching warmouths in a lake off of the little pee dee in 10 fow. Water temp was 53 to 56 degrees. My dad loves fishing for them so he decided he wanted to go this weekend so we went. We went to the same spot and no fish appear on the fish finder. The water temp was 58-60 degrees. I rode around the whole lake and was unable to find any fish in the lake on the fish finder. The lake turns into a swamp at the tree line for as far as you can see. Where the water is about 1-2ft deep. During the summer the water in the river and lakes drops and the swamps dry up mostly. I have heard many people say you cant catch fish until the water falls because the fish are in the swamps. I catch them all winter long without any problems and the water is always high in the winter. Do you think the fish are in the swamp? I have a hard time believing this for some reason. I understand there is opportunity for fish to feed in the swamp with warmer weather and more vegetation to attract food for the fish. If so did the change in water temp drive their movement? There are no brush piles or grass beds in this lake and I did not catch any fishing around stumps on the side of lake. It's like they vanished. Ended up catching 3 warmouths, 1 crappie, and a 1 bowfin on jigs in another lake. Any insight is appreciated.

    Thanks

If you are confident fish are there and aren't marking them, they are either glued to the bottom or very shallow. But it wouldn't surprise me if they ran into the swamp either. If the water levels allowed for them to make that move, the warmer temps this week could have pushed them there

Another thing to think about is (did y'all have any rain between trips). First I do believe the fish went into the shallow water when it heated close to 60 when the males will start making their beds as gills start spawning in waters 64 - 66 up into the high 70's degree. Second if yall did get some good rains fresh water brings in insects from dry ground and insect washed out of the tree's which would pull the fish into the shallow water to feed on a buffet of bugs.

A good friend of mine told me once that all these fish come equipped with fins, which creates a challenge! I would suspect they are following the bait into the shallows as long as they can. We used to catch a good many fish after the water drops that are landlocked into "ponds" back in the swamp down at upper Marion. I also remember when they are shallow they would be up under the tree stumps and we assumed they were hiding or spawning? never did really figure it out but they would be in the shade for sure...Good luck taking your dad, enjoy it with him while you can! Sure miss mine....
