I thought it was a fun time. It's kinda like standing at the door at the mall at 6:00 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving.:p
Depends on what you are looking for..I've gone to a few sales and when they first started they grouped liked rods together (wonder, tiger etc) in a 55 gal drum..The problem was one vendor would latch onto a drum and claim his prize.Keep in mind that there is several hundred people that had waited in line since early AM(back in the day you could camp out)once they open the door its every man for himself. They don't have any signs inside to tell you what you are looking for,So its alot of bumping and running around to start out.I've never got to buy one Wonder Rod in my years of trying @ the Sale, never saw any crappie rods and it took me 2 years to round up 8 Tiger rods.I was first in line a couple of times and that was the only way I was able to get hold of a few Tigers and 7' casting rods. They use to sell a few vhf radios @ a good price. Its best to go with someone and split up grab what ya can and decide later on what you want to keep.People come from all over (vendors) and grab alot of rods, sit next to the walls while a buddy buys $1500 limit and comes back for the next load..Kinda sounds like a elephant in a cane patch with all the rods flying everywhere:D .Like I said it depends on what your looking for, some of the good stuff will be gone early but if your not picky and want some ultra-light rods, reels and line its worth a try. There will be a abundance of rods to go around. They are better @ separating like rods now and most of the pushing and bumping is over after the first hour:D .Good luck if ya go.Originally Posted by Bream King

I'll ugly down there in tow for a couple deals.Maybe then we could form a plan of attack to where everyone gets what they are after.Split up and cover more ground.
Commercial fishermen help feed the world.
About half the people are bait and tackle shop owners. They'll go there and stock their store for the whole year on what they buy at the Shakespeare sale. You'll see 100 people with 55 gallon drums attached to hand trucks full of all kinds of rods. They buy so much they have to bring their own shopping cart. Those drums look just like the ones that they have the rods in that are for sale. Be careful looking through the stuff or somebody will say, "Hey, this is my stuff!" Don't worry, I did it a couple of times last year.
Anyway, like dad said above we were way back in line but there is literally 50,000 rods in there for sale, plus some reels, line, life jackets, kids stuff, etc, etc. Most of the reels were factory reconditioned. A lot of the cheaper baitcasters that sell at Wal-Mart for $15-$25 were $5-$10. They had some new stuff but it wasn't that good of a deal, maybe a few bucks cheaper than Wal-Mart.
The rods are all mixed up so you'll spend at least an hour or so looking through 50 barrels for what you want. If you go saying you have to have something really specific you may be disappointed. We went looking for 7' striper rods and found some. I got 6 matching "Catera" rods and dad got some mixed up ones. He didn't want to get in there and get physical like I did. I also got 2 cheap baitcaster combos for $7.50 each. They sell at Wal-Mart for $24.99 so I got a good deal but right now I don't really have a use for them.
Get your stuff and find a spot on the wall and hang out for an hour or two. They'll make an announcement around 10:00 or so that everything with a yellow sticker (that's 95% of all the rods) are now 50% off. Last year I got 7 rods plus the two combos for $88, I believe. We took our stuff to the car and went back in again. That's when I found the two cheap combos. I do remember they had a TON of the ultralight 5'6" spinning combos for about $10 each. I don't think they were Ugly Sticks but the price is right. They had some 8-10 foot Ugly Stick crappie rods but they had white stickers on them so they weren't 50% off. I think they were in the $20-$25 range.
Guys,be sure to wear safety glasses to not get your eyes poked out by fellers trying out the action on the rods, you'll do more weaving and bobing than a boxer in training.I went twice in one trip, first and last time, but I will say I was looking for something in particular, and didnt find them. The sale kinda reminds me of how a fire ant hill looks when you kick it.I wish they had a smaller dollar limit for the customer to spend,so guys wouldnt buy rods by the arm fulls...
HEY,,WATCH THAT YELLOW ROD
I see 2 9' uglies. Which one re ya'll referring to? The USCR 90 or the SPL 1100?
all im looking for is some 8 ft tigers to do my drift fishing for catfish with. sounds like id be better off going to a dealer and gettin em, without all that hassle. ill probably go, just for the experience but also keeping in mind i may not find what im looking for, then i wont come home dissapointed. me and big e was talking last night about a bunch of us going down together. that would probably be as much fun as doing a rodeo.
listen with your eyes---its the only way to beleive what you hear...
The USC spring game is also that day so we will be in the parking lot eating fried chicken and downing meds after we leave the Shakespere sale. (the stadium is across the parking lot, for those that have never been) I think the spring game starts at 1 or 2. It should be a full day.Originally Posted by rango
