My way of thinking is the removable split shots would have more drag and may not get as deep as you think...if I need to add weight I will run a two jig setup , I do not use any swivels I figure the more knots the more chances of a break off,
I tie all my jigs with a loop knot.

I use split shots and know they get deeper...if drag was a insurmountable issue, two jigs would also create more drag than one. That's my experience anyways.

14 rods out the back of the boat with double jigs on each line would be disastrous. As I have stated many times before....do your homework and you'll KNOW how deep a 1/16th jig and splitshot runs before hitting bottom.

Separation is the key! Get some 18ft rods and fill in the gaps with 3ft separation between rod tips. Boat 6ft. wide plus 2 eighteen foot rods gives you 42 feet of coverage. You can easily get 14 rods out with 3ft of separation. Key is to be quick getting to the rod and get the fish moving. When Im fighting a big fish, I will raise the 2 rods on both sides to get the tips in the air. Almost at a 45 angle. Helps get the lines out of the water a lil. I use driftmasters and 10ft rods for my middle 8 rods so it's easy to move them up and down quickly. You can't do that with other holders and short rods. I will always use double jigs long lining. I like catching 2 at a time. The tangles is something you just can't avoid sometimes though. Comes with the territory sad to say.

When I do get my lines tangled, I don't waste much time trying to untangle them. I just cut the line about 2ft above top jig. Then I use a triple overhand knot, same I use for loop knots, to connect to main line and I'm back fishing. I haven't had a problem with line twist at all from the knot.

I was replying to CK's post about regular split shot verse removable shot the kind with the ears..... Don't believe I ever said the drag was insurmountable

Midcarolina, no offense intended. Btw, I use the removable split shot and have found that it runs about 2-3' deeper than without it. That is based on the amount of line out that I run on all the rods.

Gabepeeps, all I can say is "you da man"! Back when I first started longlining I pulled a many a double jigs and caught my share of fish. I also had my share of tangles while pulling those doubles. I still get enough tangles pulling singles. The major problem I always had was when multiple rods had fish on them and you was only able to get to one at a time. Dont get me wrong...lots of fun but also alot of work. I much prefer single jigs per line now and compensate for the doubles when I need to be deeper by using larger jigs or adding weight to get them there. Them 18'ers must be something else. My longest poles are 14'ers and about all I can handle hauling without breaking rods down for traveling. Dont care to do that but that's because I'm just lazy.

Thanks all I am using a small screwdriver that works real well removing the splitshot.

Great read. Keep the posts coming. Been trolling and long lining since about 75 and still picked up some really nice pointers from this read. Thanks to all that made this read enjoyable.
