this photo shows the 2 oz weight down near the bottom. i was using live bait, so in this one, the lead shows up as the the strong return and the minnow as the weaker return. the minnow is swimming above the lead weight. the rod was off to the front left, and the foward movement of the boat was pulling the bait back enought for the transducer to pick up.

on this photo, because of the way the boat was drifting in the wind, the lowrance was picking up both lines off the front. the one just below the 20 ft depth was the rod and bait off the front left and the one at about 26 ft was the lead of the rod off the front right of the boat. in this one, the minnow isnt showing up very well because it was further from the transducer and the signal was weaker than the left rod

rango, those photos are extremely helpful, thanks for posting those with explanations.

My friend sent me the following sonar pics from lake murray, not sure if he took them or not but regardless they are pretty cool. one is a bridge and the other is a house thats near the dam on Lake Murray.

    Default a interesting tip.....

reading the main board the other day, i discovered something about the lowrance units with gps i dint know. with the map screen brought up, if you hit the exit button three times you will get a speedometer brought up. it also comes up if you got the h20 ifinder. the reason i got the ifinder is to keep a check on my trolling speed from the front of the boat. the speed is hard to see when its on digital but with the speedometer brought up you can keep track of your speed very easy. just an interesting bit of info i figgered those of you with lowrance units might not know. you can get the emulators from the lowrance web page so you can practise using your units on the computer.

Ya Know Rango,The plain ole X70A that I have as a Depth Finder has SO MANY Options that i have never Used , then I got the Big Screen GPS by Lowrance & OMG I have yet to figger 1/10th the Options that it has ,,,,, Most of the time instead of reading I will call one of my buddys & ask them

I do wonder why Lowrance has just a lake or 2 with the upgraded maps when OTHER states have 10-12 or more lakes upgraded

as much as i play with my unit, on the boat and on the puter, ive learned the lowrance menu pretty good. the menus seem to be about the same on all the units so thats a plus for me to stick with the lowrance equipment. i dont wanna learn a new menu. when i got the h20 i pretty well understood how the menu worked so its farily easy for me to use now. i still dont know the gps stuff all that well, but the sonar, ive pretty well got down pat.(at least enough for me to get by with). my unit is old, (x15mt), but they keep it updated with their down loads. the other day i couldnt get my unit to take the upgrade so i called lowrance and talked to a real nice lady tech who talked me through some stuff and it still wouldnt take so shes gonna send me one of their chips to use instead of the one i made.another plus for lowrance is their customer service. the unit i have works great, but they got me slobbering all over myself with these color units that you are supposed to be able to see pretty good in the sunlight. BPS has the one im craving on sale right now but im not financially able to get it yet. about three years ago i seen the lowrance mapping boat on wylie. it was a big boat with lowrance mapping in big letters on the side. it had one of the big antennaes on top and they was working wylie down towards the dam, back and forth, back and forth the whole time we was there. looks like to me they could just take a contour map of the lake and enter it in their programs and use that, but it must be a copyright issue or they can do it cheaper theirselves than buy the rights to a contour map like the king fishers. theres only two of the upgraded maps for sc, wylie and keowee i think. why them two lakes and not lakes like murray or the santee systems or the border lakes with ga was chosen instead i dont know. i sorta suspect they chose wylie cause of the bass masters on it year before last and they wanted the map for the carpers to use. good exposure to a lot of folks. money talks

One feature I like on my Eagle gps/depthfinder is the OVERLAY feature. You can find this item on the Main Menu screen. In the Overlay menu you can select the GPS speed indicator to be depicted on the main screen upper left corner. This allows you to have your depth finder screen tracking the bottom and fish while you have the speed depicted. I use this setup most of the time and all the time when trolling. It allows me to locate the striper schools and have the boat speed tracked perfectly for hookup.
