It's mostly up to each individual to try determining what youre seeing on your unit that wasnt there an hour ago when you havent moved during that time. The more you study it while out fishing the more I believe you learn. For me atleast, when I see a pattern of lines appearing and disappearing at a same steady depth underneath the shad I try dropping a few lines to within a foot or show shy of that depth as see if there's any takers. If I tend to catch crappie off them rods then I feel most of the lines I'm seeing are crappie......but who knows?!? If there's enough "lines" appearing in one depth more so than at any other depths and I catch some fish at those depths, I'll move most all my lines to that depth.
I'm with ya, I figured as much, if you're catching them then you know what they are! Since I'm kinda new to this, I didn't know if there were other factors that might help identify what kind of fish you are looking at, like if they're in groups, depth, etc. I've been out tooling around with mine as much as possible so hope to get it dialed in one day.

I saw this Friday evening. Looks like a ball of baitfish to me. Would you agree?

Bait up top. Idk what in the middle or bottom. Sorry for the fuzzy photo. In reality, no good defined acrches or beginnings of an arch then straight line like a stationary fish. Odd shapes. Taken at night, night stalkin with lights on a HB 565. Looks like that everytime I put em in a little while.

Proof of whats up in the top of the water column

I have a question about a couple numbers on my fish hinder. I have a Humminbird PiranhaMAX 220. It is a duel beam. In the Upper right corner it displays my Upperrange and in the bottom right corner it displays my lowe range. What do those nummers mean? At the left in large numbers it shows teh temp and the depth, so I am not sure what those numbers are for and how I am suppose to use them.
    Thanks for the help...
