Thumbs down Toxic chemicals in Lake Wateree

Some of Lake Wateree’s most popular game fish are polluted with a cancer-causing material that has made them unsafe to eat in more than moderate amounts.
The state Department of Health and Environmental Control has issued a health advisory for striped bass, blue catfish and largemouth bass after finding PCBs in those species at Lake Wateree. The advisory tells people to limit consumption of those fish.

Am I the only one or have you guys noticed a tread in these reports on ALL the lakes looked at so far?!? Do you think this is something new or is it something that has been around for years & just been discovered or published about? With E.P.A. as tough as it's been for the past 20 years or more I just dunno...

I dont think it something new at all.I think its been there for a long time and just the right folks(mabey) had to study/report on it.Wateree "should" be better now because of the most plants that dumped into the river is shut down so you would think that when all the textile plants were wide open and dumping into the catawba it'd been worse than it is now!?

I read on another site that it had been 10 years since wateree had been tested, I heard back last winter that SC was behind on testing and the funds were not there to test on a regular bases.

I believe that every lake I fish has warnings about eating the fish. I don't eat many of the bigger fish so I may be good for a few years.

This has got me to thinking about the fish I kept back last winter, Do I eat them or not? I have not eat any of them since I read the report a few months ago.

i feel like the contaminants have been there all along and the words just getting out. most of you that have fished with me know i dont keep fish very often as our fish fry core has mostly moved on and we dont do fries very often. i dont know wether to breathe a sigh of relief cause i have eaten very little fresh water fish in years or feel bad cause i give em to someone else.

I read the same about Hartwell several years ago. When the biologist was pinned down he admitted that you would have to eat something like 5 lbs of fish a week every week for 30 years to get into the danger zone.

I'm about like Rango. Since the docs stopped me from eating fried fish most of the fish goes back into the lakes. It does make you wonder just what you have consumed.

From what I have read it's ok to eat one meal of fish a week and they are just talking about the bigger fish. I have not seen anywhere that perch, crappie or bream has a limit on how much to eat.
I think you would be alright with eating your fish.
