    Default Trying a New/Old Method...

Gotta question for some of the older guys on here. I'm thinking of trying something new for a few hours this weekend. I'm going to try to get back to the basics a little bit and see if I can't find a few big females up shallow early. Coolbreeze talked to me bout doing it and gave me the idea...

I'm planning on fishing some flats (almost oxbows) off the river channel that are shallow and filled with stickup and trash. I was going to take one of my long poles and put a cork about a foot up and dunk a minnow around the stickups in shallow water. Question is do you think it's too early to do this? Water temps will be close to 60 i would guess. They were anywhere from 55-59 last week and its been a warm couple days since then.

Reason for trying this is we caught some nice females on Friday in a creek run and they were gone by Saturday. Tried throwing the banks Saturday, but never found them. Where in the world do these fish go? Back out deep....on up the creek run.... to the banks.... The eggs weren't anywhere ready to lay, but the water temp should have them up shallow before long.
Hooking up every chance I get!

CB, I used to fish this way all the time. 'Course I started in standing timber fishing over deep water with a cork set at about 4' deep dabbling from stickup to stickup. As the fish moved shallower so did I. I've read reports of people catching fish in 3'-6' of water but I havent yet. I'm still catching fish about 10' deep in 15'-30' (mainly 20' deep water....give or take) of water and like you said...the eggs arent anywhere near ready to lay yet even though surface temps say it's time.:o I'd say it's worth a try. Nothing says you gotta fish this way all morning if youre not getting bit.

Save this method till the afternoon . It seems to work better as the day warms up . I know of 46 caught like this tuesday afternoon at the hill . about 18" Deep along the banks , around falllen trees and stickups . Good luck , this is a tried and true method !

You know that is some logical thinking--same as I was thinking yesterday morning.I had a 10 ft pole with a brim hook and a ugly stick with jig on to throw to banks.I was positive I was gonna catch those females. But as the old saying goes"You cant fool Mother Nature"--Where and how I found fish yesterday was Longlining over 19--22 ft water and the crappie was up in the water column.Did not find or see anyone catching off bank or shallow--water temp was 61 Degrees--but fish were still holding to mouths of creek runs--go fiffer--lol. BTW I fished Greenwood--there has been too many people layely on Murray.:D

I agree with fishing em in the afternoon. I have had some people tell me that the crappie were on the banks but I have not found any on the bank. I have caught some in 8' of water, they were hanging close to a ledge. Lot of the fish that I have found the last two weeks are hanging on ledges and deeper flats.
When I fish a flat with stumps that are covered I use my spider rigging rods with a float. I set the hooks 3 to 4' deep, leave enough line out the rod so the float can move a couple of feet and the crappie can't feel the rod. This is one of those times to let the wind ease your boat around or if no wind just tap the trolling motor.
