Ethanol fuel itself doesn’t leave residue but it dissolves gaskets and plastics over time which will clog fuel lines etc. hence why I only run 0E in my boat, lawn equipment and chainsaws.
So from part one of "did I find something" you may have seen that I found some bad things on the carburetor, namely broken off bolts. Of course no I gotta break into the carbs and take a look see. After all, the motor was running like garbage, and problems with the carbs might splain stuff.
I open the first carbs float bowl (there are four carbs), and lookie the garbage in it.
I check the fuel pumps, and lookie the garbage in it!
OMG, there's a ton of this garbage, might splain why the motor runs like garbage, right?
Question, is this stuff ethanal garbage/residue?
Now I gotta clean everthing, and whilst I wait for rebuild kits from the Amazonians, I try to remove the jets. I got two jets off, and two are stuck like heck. What would you do. I'm thinking I just spray the heck out if the jets from both sides with brake clean and try to run it. Hate to have to drill them out, but if I have to I will. The other one I tried to remove looks even worse! embarrassed to show it! But the little hole in it is fine, and I think the brake clean will clean out all the other little holes in that pipe above the jet just fine too. I clean everything with Brake clean, love the stuff.

Carb cleaner or soaking in kerosene might help boss.

Here is my experience with Wax deposits. Engines I serviced that bought their fuel from the local Marina, same said engines that the boat owner never, ever, ran the tank down on fuel but just topped it up when coming in, those engines would have the waxy deposits in the carbs see here. So not only do you clean the carb bowls, jets, etc but be sure and clean the passage between the stripped Main Jet to the Venturi because the wax loves to build up in that vertical passage, layer upon layer, till it starts starving the engine for fuel under a load. 2 Stroke engines risk Lean Burning a Piston. My
Darn waxy buildup! They should be using lemon pledge, right! J/k
Good to know. Wonder if cars are like that too. Wifey likes to keep full tank, and I always tell her I use my whole tank, top to almost bottom, I wait till it roughly hits a quarter tank or slightly lower. Yeah I know supposably you should fill up earlier cause fuel injection cools the fuel pump with fuel, but it has enough to cool it still. IMHO

No, you are correct about running your tank to 1/4. Best practice to have. In winter free vented tanks like boats have will make water if not kept full but today's vehicles have sealed fuel systems so its not the issue. Aluminum tanks are the worst.
Not sure if a Marina gets a different gasoline than retail locations not on the water but Marina gas is the only source I have run across for the gunk in your carbs.

The best penetrating oil for stuff like that I’ve ever heard of was 50/50 acetone and trans fluid. I’ve mentioned that to many mechanics I’ve crossed paths with and some never heard of it but others agreed that it works great. Back when I fooled with motorcycles there was a 1 gallon can of carb cleaner that got everything loose. Left long enough it would eat the casings. Always removed all the funk we came across. Hope the casings are still good on yours. Good thing you like projects.m
Automatic transmission fluid is what I store carbs in. I fill them to the top and store in a new bucket with a lid.

It looks like broken down liner from fuel lines. Cut open your lines to check.
