It’s because your in shallow water, I don’t remember for sure how to fix it.
Lower your sensitivity should fix it if I remember correctly.

Usually a hard bottom will give a second echo. Some people don’t like this, but I have no problem with it. However on my 7 it will at time give the depth reading of the second echo, this is very irratating. You can manually set your depth to hide the second echo and maybe adjust your sensitivity down a little but the unit is doing what all units I’ve ever owned do. I wouldn’t worry over it, have fun and enjoy it!

See my post below concerning this with my Helix 10 as Rickie explains it along with a solution.

Here is what Rickie posted: Try turning off CHIRP 2d in the "CHIRP Configuration" Menu under the Setup tab ...
Then in the Beam Frequency Menu under the Sonar tab select 200kHz only ...

It's a bug ... We all know it ... HB has not acknowledged the bug as of yet ...

Thanks, dhaire. The 200kHz gives the best 2d, and that what I was looking for.

You are welcome and sorry I took so long to reply. I am an Army Man too but retired so I can fish and not train to fight (smile). Thanks to the younger generation!

The thing that causes this. And it is just a different way to set up your 2d to make it easier to recognize. First your water depth is about 5', far right screen is current data as you scroll left historical data, and your max depth is set to 23, manually. This is what is causing the false echo, but it is a indication of hard bottom. Useful tool when you only have a monochrome unit. I keep my max depth set to about 35' in manual, it keeps the screen from jumping around so much and I can keep better track of what contours I have passed over. Just my preference. Also, the top photo left panel is what a thermocline would look like on the screen, the thick red line is the hard bottom. Thermocline's are usually much deeper though.
