    Default Wintertime fishing

Hey, guys. Thinking of hanging it up here in Central Texas for wintertime fishing as I cannot seem to see a crappie much less buy one. Friend (guide) says find the bait you will find the fish. Also said go deep. So, in 54 degree water I went from 30 fow to 43 fow (about as deep as Lake Austin gets) searching for bait balls and fish. I have a Helix 10 and side view, down view, or traditional sonar found very few possibles. No bites either. Could someone post some pics of what I am supposed to look for? Either that or I am going to hit up Ketchn to take me dock fishing. Thanks.

Are there any defined creek channels that the crappie would be using as a highway to and from shallower haunts ...??

We have few coves that would have channels as it is a dammed up river (Colorado) but I suppose there may be some. In the summer we often find points emanating from the few coves we have that hold crappie particularly when they have the smallest of structure.

Wish we had some. Only bridge is 360 bridge (penny packer) and the columns are on dry land. Thx for the thought, though.

This information can possibly be used as a baseline on most any body of water ...

Winter time is the best. Maybe you’re getting bites but don’t even know it.

Thanks, Rickie. Our water is just now down to 54 degrees and will probably stop at 50 degrees. Just does not get too cold here in Central Texas. I will just keep plugging on. Our guides continue to say find bait balls in deep water. Still looking. Assume down view and traditional sonar would show best but not sure.

You should be able to see the shad balls on all 3, DI, Si, regular sonar. Si would be my preference.

Here is my thoughts, and also my struggles. I have heard that crappie school tight during winter, and I have witnessed that. In my mind, the tighter they’re schooled, the smaller the overall area they will occupy. This would make them tougher to pinpoint, but once found, then it could be on for awhile. Again, that’s my way of thinking. Maybe someone with more experience will either verify or nullify this
