Default Location of AS GPS HS puck

Anticipate the heralded arrival of the new antenna. YouTube has several videos and most mention placing the puck away from any item that could cause an interference issue like large pieces of metal (trolling motor) or electrical interference like electronics. Some suggest placing the puck on the aft end. I would prefer placing it on the bow on the opposite corner of the trolling motor. Assuming I check the position first (duct tape or other temp mounting) by checking the north orientation is there any other issue I need to watch. I have finally gotten over my aversion to drilling holes in my boat but I would rather my placement be the first and last position.

If this puck will be used with the console unit I highly recommend mounting the puck on the back of the boat, as close as you can get it to being above the transducer.... but not get interference from the motor. This will provide you the most accurate marking of waypoints and easiest navigating to a marked waypoint. Check location you want to mount it to with a compass. Move the compass around the area... if the needle moves.... try another spot. Duct tape works good to temp mount it and adjust position.

On your unit select to display your readout boxes on the side of your screen. Change 2 of those boxes to "COG" and "Heading". Then drive around and watch those two numbers. Your goal is to adjust the direction of the arrow on the puck so that those two boxes read really close to the same number while moving. Watch the video below...

** restart the video if is starts in the middle.

Great video and I had already watched it before this posting. I will watch it with due diligence the next time. This antenna is for the Helix 10 mounted on a RAM mount on the bow. Helix 10 transducer is mounted on the Ulterra Trolling Motor hence my desire to mount the puck on the bow. I will acquire a compass to test the location then truly test it per the video before mounting it permanently. Thanks for the input and taking the time to craft such a complete post.

I actually had good luck mounting my bow AS GPS HS on the deck by the trolling motor pedal. I wanted to put it up on the front fiberglass, but I could not find a spot that did not show interference with a compass there. It sure is great with a bow unit though when fishing off shore structure/waypoints. Also take advantage of the "casting rings" or "proximity flags" features to really help pinpoint things.

Ok-AS GPS HS antenna came in last night. As my transducer is mounted on my Ulterra trolling motor I want to mount it on the bow. I actually did not get any obvious interference with the hand held compass even closer to the bow light (yes-I turned it on, as well) and the trolling motor. I picked a spot that I feel is close enough to the transducer, away from stumbling over it, and where I already had a penetration hole in the bow that I will have to enlarge. Here is a pic. Of course I will tape it down for several runs but what do you think about my proposed placement? Thanks so much for taking the time to post your comments.Name: IMG_0158.jpg

Default Location of AS GPS HS puck

Of course that would work ...
    -----

Another option is to sandwich a plate between the gimbal mount and the ram mount for the AS GPS HS antenna ...

Wow! Now that would be sweet. I assume I need to fabricate something or is something like that available on the market? If not, what materials should I consider? You are absolutely a fount of knowledge and great ideas!

Plastic cutting board from Walmart has good weather resistant properties ...

And it's easy to work with ...

On the fishing electronics and photography there is a post from NIMROD about the same thing. Two of Rickie's units are posted along with mine. As I wanted the puck right on top of my ducer. I remove my T/M when not in use, as the boat is stored outside for all to see.
