    Default Newbie sonar questions again

This pic appears to have tons of fish suspended throughout the water column, however, the sonar returns and the white specks on the DI all seem to indicate they are tiny. What size and species may they be based on their sonar returns and position in the water column? Also what is causing all of the returns coming from 30-40 fow on the 2D sonar? Thermocline?

This shot I am passing under a bridge which has a total of 4 columns on each side. The SI and DI do a good job of showing that. I passed close by to the columns on my left which I assumed is why the DI caught them too. It looks like there are lots of fish and even a couple of large bait balls or schools of something. Any ideas on what I am looking at? Also same returns at 30 fow and down.

I'm drifting here with my chart speed set on 1 mph I believe. These kind of slow moving shots still dont make much sense to me. Is the returns DI is picking up a piece of structure or what? And again the 30 fow+ readings on 2d sonar.

How much have you played around with settings? If you have your 2D on switchfire max mode and sensitivity up you will see fine particles on screen. Also, with SI and DI the fish "dots" are not neccesarily going to correlate with what you see on 2d as far as size goes.

Also, on your DI/SI it looks like you may have your sharpness on which will show additional dots that can sometimes be mis-leading as fish.

No expert but have been playing around with my SI/DI unit for 2 years now and continue to fiddle with settings and learn little tweaks. Definitely the learning curve is worth it as it has helped me become a better fisherman.

I learned alot by watching videos from this website http://www.technologicalangler.com/home He also has several free videos if you search you tube.

I agree - lots of small fish ... and thermocline at 30ft

The DI image in the HB core series SI units is computer generated from the data in the SI image because there is no DI piezo in the SI xducer - so what you see in the DI image is the same data seen in the SI image = just in a DI image looking format

The structure in the DI image looks like the same bridge pilings as before but caught in the SI beam as the boat was turning ... causing the structure to look "smeared" ...Slanted vertical lines in the 2d image are usually bubbles rising from the bottom and getting closer to the xducer as the Sonar cone moves forward with boat travel ...

My settings are relatively default. Here the sonar switchfire is off and on clear mode. I do have the sharpness for DI set to low as opposed to off. And all of my sensitivity settings are 10 I think.

    Thanks Rickie!

I will add that that last picture is from a different area of the lake than the first two pictures. Should have made that clear. I was drifting and using the TM and probably spinning the boat a little.
