    From all I've read, the transducer should be on the right side(starboard). The reason given was the forward rotation of the prop is clockwise and it creates bubbles or turbulence on the port side of the rotation. This can cause interference with the DF.
    Not sure how valid this is, but mine also came mounted on the port side and I moved to other side when I bought new units.

    I have a 798 on my boat that I mounted, had the same problem so I talked to a few members here and on another site and began trouble shooting the issue, turned out my livewell fill screen was not allowing a clear path for the transducer. I added a 3/4" mounting block to get it out further for a clear shot and lowered the transducer about an 1/2" so I could improve on depth readings while on top traveling. Worked like a charm.
