    Default Water column question

What is the width of water column at bottom of lake? If water depth is 20' and I have my distance lines turned on it shows water column 20' wide each side of boat.

The width of the water column varies with the depth of the water.

WATER COLUMN AT 20 FEET DEEP WOULD SHOW ANY OBJECT THAT IS 20 FEET OR LESS STRAIGHT OUT TO SIDE TO THE 20 FOOT BOTTOM,PIC IT LIKE A PENULIM THAT IS HOOK TO TRANSDUCER AND SWING SIDEWAYS TO TOP OF WATER TO BOTTOM STRAIGHT UNDER BOAT,THAT IS WHAT WILL BE SEEN IN THAT ZONE ,I AM TALKING ABOUT SI ,THAT IS ,FOR SIDE VIEW

One has to visualize the water column separately from the bottom detail ...

The water column (each side of the centerline) is equal to the water depth ... Any target that resides within the range equal to the water depth will be shown in the water column ...

Notice the 2 fish targets is the left SI below are the same "range" from the xducer ...and therefore painted the same distance from the centerline in the SI image ... Their shadows tell our mind's eye where those 2 fish are in the water column ...

As Gene explains ... We can take a string attached to the xducer and arc the string from "water surface left to water surface right" ... and any target that resides within that semicircle will be painted in the water column as "range to that target" ...

Then we use the shadow of the target to help visualize where that target is in that semi circle that is "equal to water depth" ...

Rnvinc thinks for the good info. I'm wanting to know how far structure within the water column on the bottom of lake is from boat when using side imaging.

Remembering that the width of the water column (from centerline outward) is equal to the water depth ...

If the target is in the water column = it's range from the xducer is less than the water's depth reading ...
