Default Can't catch my waypoint ???

In using my HB 859 DI yesterday , I ran into an issue I've never had. I had previously marked waypoints that I was moving in on to fish. The waypoinjt dots were jumping all around on .me. They would show to be 100 foot to the front and right of my boat position and as I approached them, they would suddenly show to be directly behind me 50 feet, then the chart would spin and they would show to be 100 foot to my left, the maybe 200 feet to the front and left, etc. Everytime I tried to approach , they would shift around to places on the lake that I knew were not correct. For example, I was trying to fish a channel that I know is about 250 yards from the bank, but the waypoints would keep moving around to maybe 100 yards off the bank, then move back to about where I know they are supposed to be. Another thing I noticed was that my little red boat icon would change to a round red circle and it appeared that when this happened, it would stop tracking where I was going for a while and then the boat icon would reappear and start tracking again. Any ideas ?

Another issue is that I was trying to change the digital readout boxes. I went to Advanced mode and Setup screen and would select the way I wanted the boxes to raedout, but when I would exit the Set up mode the digital readout boxes would stay the same as before. Is there something I should be doing to Save my selections? I can't find any Save method from looking at the owners manual.

    Any help appreciated......

You have some strange things going on ... and some normal things going on ...

1st ... Our consumer grade GPS is only accurate to 8-15ft (EPE Estimated Position Error)... so at very slow speeds (0.6mph or less) the GPS is not recognizing that you are actually moving farther than EPE in between GPS data samples ...

It is normal for HB GPS to display a circle below 0.6mph because this is the indication that you are not moving far enough (beyond the EPE at the moment) to actually determine that you have indeed moved ... So the unit is "waiting" for more GPS data samples to see if you move far enough to discern you did move ...
    -----

2nd ... The Chart is spinning at these slow speeds because the Chart is programed to default to "North Up" orientation when the GPS cannot discern boat movement ... If your "Chart Orientation" setting under the Chart tab is set to "Course Up" or "Heading Up" - and your boat slows to below 0.6mph = the Chart spins from the "Orientation setting" you have set ...to the default Chart orientation setting of "North Up" ... (really aggravating when boat speed is right at 0.5mph-0.6mph with the Chart spinning from your setting orientation to default orientation and back and forth) ...

There are 2 ways to deal with the Chart spinning issue ...
    1. Never slow down below 0.6mph so that the GPS can always discern boat boat movement ...
    2. Set the "Chart Orientation"'setting "North Up" and learn to use your mapping in the "North Up" orientation ...

And there is the optional AS GPS HS antenna ...which has an internal magnetic compass that will always show boat orientation on the Chart view ... No more donut circle ...
    Humminbird | AS GPS HS
    -----

3rd ... Your Waypoints jumping on the Chart to different places ... Or maybe the entire Chart is jumping ... This is not normal ...

Try a Restore Defaults under the Setup tab and report back on this issue ...
    -----

4th ... Some of the readout boxes are hard coded when viewing any Chart view or Combo with Chart view ... This is because the HB GPS programmers "think" you should always need to see COG to know where you're going any time you are looking at a map ...

With your 859 ... I'm not sure which boxes are hard coded on Chart views ... It may be only box 1 is changeable in Chart views... I'm not sure ...

Open a Chart view ... Then try to change a readout box one at a time ... Exiting out of the Main Menu System each time ... If that readout box did not change ... It's hard coded on Chart views ...

Very informative...thanks. I was trolling at about .6 mph into a stiff wind and then drifting backwards some and using the trolling motor to hold my boat nose into the wind. So , I bet you are correct about the "true north" orientation getting me.

I will try it again tomorrow and do the Restore Defaults if the problem persist coz the waypoints were definitely moving around and showing up to 150 yards from where they were supposed to be -at times and then going back to where they are really located.

I sure hope it an easy fix coz the unit just went out of warranty on Feb 14th

Tried the suggestions made and found that the "COG" digital readout box will not go away when I have any combo screen up with part of it a nav chart. That is the one I was trying to get rid of.

As for the way points jumping around...they seemed to have corrected themselves when I was on the water Monday. Did not happen one time. The chart spinning issue was occurring but after the explanation from Rickie, I understand why.

Thanks for all the help Rickie.

North Up Chart orientation is not that difficult to learn ...

I first started learning North Up by putting N E S W stickers on each edge of my display ...

Then when a waypoint icon is between my boat icon and the sticker ...I knew my boat had to go that direction on the Earth to get to that waypoint ...

I have a round-ball compass attached to my unit to tell me which way I need to go to get my boat icon headed toward the waypoint on the screen ...
