COG tells you where you are going and where you have been. Much different from where the boat is pointing.

    Example ...:

COG is beneficial when you're in unfamiliar territory and not aware of which way is N E S W ...

The COG reading tells you "How many degrees from Due North" your boat is traveling ...

*COG 0° = boat is traveling Due North
*COG 90° = boat is traveling Due East
*COG 180° = boat is traveling Due South
*COG 270° = boat is traveling Due West

A radical example is if you were doing a controlled drift on a river system with the boat pointing upstream. The COG would be your course downstream.

Jokes aside, I did not know that. If I ever venture out into the salt, this could come in handy. Thanks Rickie!

Welcome to the site snipey!! There are many reasons why something like this happens, and you should post this as a separate thread, so your answers don't hijack this thread.
