Example ...:
COG is beneficial when you're in unfamiliar territory and not aware of which way is N E S W ...
The COG reading tells you "How many degrees from Due North" your boat is traveling ...
*COG 0° = boat is traveling Due North
*COG 90° = boat is traveling Due East
*COG 180° = boat is traveling Due South
*COG 270° = boat is traveling Due West

A radical example is if you were doing a controlled drift on a river system with the boat pointing upstream. The COG would be your course downstream.
